With just one replacement surface texture, you can place the image file in the folder named /hires/.

Rename the images to match the texture name that's used for the planet's surface: earth.png, for example.

Then you can type a capital-R a few times to select the higher resolution surface texture.

To select among multiple surface textures, you have to create an SSC file containing AltSurface directives.

This is exactly what I'm trying to do with the Mars textures I've downloaded and have thus far only failed :(

I've created an SSC file and it's obviously wrong cos it doesn't work.... http://www.shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6971

Celestia starts looking for textures by default in the 'medres' folder and then also scans the others automatically, in case /nothing is found/ in 'medres'.

In order to move upwards in resolution at any time, type

SHIFT r

to move downwards, type

r

The keys are all in the key-shortcut file, for you to read...
