Warming up with GIMP Tutorials!

Hi all,

find below a few selected, excellent tutorials with the GIMP that will teach interested potential "image manipulators" some basic techniques.

Everyone interested e.g. in assembling cylindrical texture maps from Cassini photos, should know these things before starting.

To get some first feedback, I have asked ElChristou to comment about that selection. This is presumably quite useful for others. If YOU want to make comments as well, please DO SO!

Your impressions might get others interested and some fun communication and joint learning experience may evolve from it...

Yes using Alpha channel is always very utile

This tool is not so easy to use... it's hard to control the selection with a mid tone image...

Yes gradient brush is super utile (have you used it in the bottompart of Titan?) and playing with offset is evident to work on the edges of the map.

The two here are complementary, newbies will need to make some test with selective gaussian blur.

Yes, very good and very professional... good to understand the purpose of using LBA. The edge detection is only utile for very specific images... not sure (but I never test) of the result on a map moon (lot of crater), it will be to sharpened...

In many instances, I tend to agree with ElChristou, but not in everyone of his comments, of course ;-) . Perhaps at a later stage, it might be useful to discuss our different views.

These tutorials are pointing to functions existing on both programs, so having a look is not forbiden :wink:.

in my exp with both gimp and p.s.elments , once you learn the basics of
each then for the most part the tutorials are mostly interchangable

EXCEPT all the things to click are in diff. places
but the concept is the same
if you learn one in P.S. then it will take you 5 min. to get it in gimp vs./vs.

and gimp is easy to use , it can be learned in 1 wk. and you can have a fair mastory of it in 2 mo.

I don't expect to have much problems with Gimp or Photoshop.
And, as I'm currently almost overloaded with work at least 'till end of march, I will follow the lessons with quite some delay.

At the moment I don't have much time to do image stuff, so I'm not going to be able to actually work through these for a while, however I have taken a look at the tutorials and they do look clear and well-explained as far as I can see.

Very interesting, but a little depressive for me :(
Now, I understand how much I'm a newbie or even a "Brain-dead" about images transformations 8O
I learnt a lot in particurarly about the "Smart sharpening"

As Maxim and Chaos syndrome I don't have enough time to do all what I have to do, but I will take a look at the lessons (and I will try to understand :D )

Don't worry there is nothing really hard for the moment :wink:.
If you want to understand what will follow, you need to familiazize yourself with those bases. Seems that Fridger don't want off topic questions when we will be talking on other kind of task...

So for the questions on photoshop/gimp bases it's the good moment.

Tu peux me contacter via les "private messages", je me ferais un plaisir de r?©pondre ?  tes questions.

The good use of photoshop/gimp is not only helpfull for the cylindricals maps but also for all kind of work in add-ons creation...

I have a some good experience now with photoshop and 'infographie' in general and I really look forward to get help about cylindrical texture maps...

as for an off topic

with mmps there is a "simple???" problem of rewriting image.cpp for straters to ues win calls and not mmap calls --- ohh i wil figure it out , but in the meen time it builds in cygwin and cygwin1.dll is included in my dl ( 7-zip file)

The Gimp explanations are already very good.
I found almost the same commands on PS but not, of course, at the same place or menus.
So I'm going to install Gimp on my PC.
I think that will be easier to execute the examples given.

Sorry I've been away, but I'm back now...

Also, what gives here? I thought that you were going to give us a
tutorial on how to manipulate textures for Celestia.

Hell, I can view the Gimp tutorials any time, but I thought that you
had some specific instruction in mind.

No? Your superb Iapetus texture would be a great example for such a
tutorial... Just a thought.
