texture problem...

Hi guyz

I am new at all this, but I`m trying to figure out how it all works. Great so far, thank you, but having a little trouble with textures.
For instance, the new 89 k ariel-texture from the beautiful Uranus-moons textures I downloaded from Bruckner: All I can see is the blurry 4k lo-res! If I replaced the 33 k med-res, nothing happens. Still blurry. If I replace the 4k lo-res, I get a beautiful white sphere - obviously texture size is too big here, but had to try. I assume the program automaticly selects lo-med-hi res texture depending on the distance you`re at. Am I right?

The other textures give the same result. Am I doing something wrong here or do I expect too much from the new texture?? I don`t think it`s my vid-card (a MSI G4 TI4400)

Got clouds on Mars and Venus working though, looks great! 8O

Hi Muzzle,

Did you give the new texture the same name? You can also edit /data/solarsys.ssc and change the filename for the texture...

They are not loading because the texture dimensions need to be a power of 2. Currently Ariel.jpg is 1440x720 pixels, you need to resize it to 1024x512 pixels. That's the only thing causing the problem. Good luck!

Yep, that did it. Nice! Thanks, Ortolan & Buzz! Keep`em all t 1024 then....

Hm. Why is the hi-res folder empty? (well, mine is, anyway. Did put them there also, didn`t work for now obvious reasons) Future expansion?

Installed de hd28185 system and wow does this look great! Well done Donald! Thinking about installing GIMP (ruthlessly promoted by Chris & Co, so it seems like the obvious choice) and experimenting a bit myself... Hope it comes with an elaborate manual

 ah, the hi-res folder is for the 2048x1024 textures, methinks ? Let`s find some an try it out... any special settings required for this? Il check the forum (Boy, are you guys creative! Found lots of beautiful things ... )

There's lots of info scattered about the forums, but to summarize:

Press r to decrease the texture resolution and R to increase it. The default is medium; increasing it will have no effect unless you've populated the hires directory with big textures. 2048x1024 is about the max size you'll want for uncompressed (non-DXT) textures. With DXT textures, you can go up to 8192x4096--look around the forum for advice on how to use them.

Ok! I do have now a beautiful Earth with shiny oceans and fluffy clouds, an impressive Io, swirling Jupiter... :D So it worx fine! Thanks! DXT-files. :?: :!: .. errr... me have a lot to do, methinks. But I`m still enjoying myself with adding addons. So far so good. This is an excellent program, it is.

Installed GIMP and it scared the hell out of me, I tell you. Don`t know doodles about this stuff. I`ll start slow and first design a pebble or something like that. ...hey, I`ll blow it up et voila, an asteroid! 8) Parbleu! Das ist ganz nicht slecht! Well, not for a while. Maybe next year. Maybe.

ps: was reading the 7 page 8O long tips for the next version and if even half of it will be implemented (some people had outrageous and beautiful ideas, probably to enter version 10.x or so... and needs a 10 mh proc... ) I will need a new computer... so be it.
