Cloud mapping: High latitude storm systems

Post #1by PlutonianEmpire » 19.12.2004, 03:36

Not altitude!

I'm trying to make a really stormy cloudmap for a planet, but my current know-how of high-latitude storm systems usually ends up distorted when placed on the planet, like here:

Got any tips on how to distort it on the cloud map so it looks good on a globe?

Briefly: after you draw it centered (so it's circular) you need to reproject it in "simple rectangular" format at the correct latitude. That'll stretch the northern parts so it'll be circular on a sphere.

Two freeware utilities that should be able to reproject a picture that way are

IRIS at http://astrosurf.com/buil/us/iris/iris.htm
by Christian Buil
and
MMPS: Matthew's Map Projection Software at

by Matthew Acrus

Does this help?

I downloaded Iris, but I don't know where to start?

It looks good, by the way. :)
