APOD for Oct 1

Anyone know what they used to generate this image - it sure doesn't look as good as a Celestia image!

Clive,

That's the same picture APOD used in 1997, and was generated by E. De Jong and S. Suzuki.

Apparently they work for JPL's Digital Image Animation Laboratory http://www-dial.jpl.nasa.gov/, which develops visualization software for NASA.

I couldn't find anything explict about what software was used, but I'm guessing that the picture is a frame from an animation that they created in 1996. Things have come a long way since then.
