Feature Idea: Lokal x,y,z-coordinates around a star

Post #1by Guckytos » 30.09.2004, 10:05

Because Chris is already rewriting the whole RA and Dec system into rectangular coordinates i had an idea.
How about a feature that allows you to define a star or a deepsky object as a local Zero point of x,y,z coordinates. From this point on you could define the postition of other stars up to a certain distance (say up to a max of 25 LY).
This would probably make the creation and positioning of clusters or nebulea addons with stars in it easier.
Okay the problems would probably be to make that only one local zero point lies in the 50x50x50 LY cube.
To make the working clear i make up an example.
Let's say you want to make some stellar systems in the Triffid nebulae
Define the Triffid nebulae as local zero.
Put your stars in a file with the x,y,z measured from the Triffid nebulae and don't forget to reference it.
Celestia takes those local x,y,z and adds/substracts them from the Triffid nebulae coordinates and then creates the stars?

I had this idea, because if Chris really puts all the real stars in the stars.dat into rectangular coordinates and i want to place a fictional one near a real one, i don't have a clue what its x,y,z would be. So this feature would work around that problem.

What do you think of this idea?

Please read The Feature Requests Collecting Thread and ADD not yet requested features (one per post) and link to this Topic!!!

Else i fear the ideas go lost with time!!!

Thanks, Dominik

That sounds more like a task for a coordinate conversion tool.
