OK, stupid question

Post #1by mmarable » 28.09.2004, 16:02

How do I select a star by its HIP number, or can't I?

I tried just entering it "HIP " as I would a named star like "Sol", but that doesn't work. I end up with Hind's Crimson Star.

For example, HIP 49986 is listed in the Star Browser, so it's out there, but how would I key it in to select it? I tried just the number but 499...finds nothing.

I've got to be missing something I'm sure.

Type a space between HIP and the number.

e.g.
<return>hip 14576<return>

selects Algol.

The HIP numbers aren't shown in the tab-completion match list, of course: there are just too many of them.

Ah ha!

I thought the tab completion list was generated automatically on the fly, so when I typed HIP and came up with nothing I figured I was doing something wrong.

Thanks Selden, works like a charm.
