Planet Landing Trouble...

Just recently got Celestia (yes i'm slow 
).
I have now figured out how to land on planets but why do you go through the ground? aren't planets solid? (well ones with land anyway
)
Could this be a new feature, solid ground for planets since landing on earth and sinking thousands of Km into the ground is not fun...
Maybe you could even crash into asteroids too???
