ATI isd destroying Nvidia.What now?

I am very concerned about the future of Celestia and its future support.Nvidia is falling back, and the mighty Geforce FX 6800 Ultra lost to the ATI X800 in many tests, specially PS 2.0 and Direct X 9.0.This could be the beggining of the end to Nvidia.I am concerned that Celestia is supporting Nvidia, but if this company crashes,we can have a problematic Celestia or even no Celestia anymore. You have to support ATI or find a way to destroy the evil canadian company who is getting control of almost 100% of the video card market, with the support of the users. What can we do?

Er, nothing? I think it's a bit too early to start panicking about the end of NVidia.

danielj,
Too much caffene?
Drink more decalf.
ATI has always been ahead of nVidia on
some tests, while nVidia is ahead of ATI on others. That's just the way it is, from what I've read about the two companies. ATI spends its money on DirectX, while nVidia spends its money on OpenGL. Such is life.

Don't be too rude with Daniel; after more than 200 posts, its the first one I read about anything but a configuration/installation problem.

Mr. Psykotik
I wasn't being rude to Daniel, I was laughing at Don.
The rest of this message was edited out by Brain-Dead Bob because he's an idiot.
Thanks, Bob

NVIDIA is alive and well . . . And Celestia runs fine on most ATI cards anyhow. It's also not true that ATI spends its money on DirectX and NVIDIA spends its money on OpenGL. Both companies are heavily invested in both APIs (I spend 8+ hours every weekday developing NVIDIA's Direct3D driver . . .

Hey Chris,
No wonder you LOVE working on Celestia, and know all the gory details of super 3-D programming!
As for R&D money being spent, yes, I'm sure both companies spend on both graphics libraries. However, it would seem that
more gets spent in the way I mentioned it, since each has it's "specialty", if that would be the right word.
As for Celestia running fine on most ATI cards ... ahem, I have a mere one-year old 9700 Pro ATI card and several things in Celestia do not work on this card, including several render paths. So, one of these bright days I plan on getting an nVidia-based graphics card to see what I've been missing in Celestia.
It's probably all ATI's problem

Any difficulties that ATI has rendering Celestia stuff I assume to be the fault of ATI, since Celestia is programmed in OpenGL (which nvidia still stomps all over ATI in).
Chris, since apparently you're an employee of nvidia (which I didn't know), can you tell me anything about ATI and how it was even able to come up with something as nifty as the X800? I mean, come on, these are the guys who made the RAGE series of chipsets! And STILL have shitty drivers for them!
My guess is that ATI did a lot of corporate espionage to get where they are today, either that or they sacked their entire engineering and driver team and replaced them with former nvidia and 3dfx employees :o

Well this is my first post to this forum after discovering Celestia thru the OpenCD, while Celestia works great in my ATI Radeon powered laptop, outer planets between Jupiter and Pluto don't render too well for some reason.
I just hope this gets fixed soon, but for now, its bearable; I don't really use Celestia for the solar system, but for the out stars in the Milky Way!

jsg,
Please give more info about your system and version of Celestia. it sound like you probably don't have the curent version of Celestia or the current drivers for your graphics card.
From now on, you should post about bugs in the bugs section of the forum...
Cheers,
Joe

Please check the ATI web site for the latest drivers for your specific model of graphics card (
http://www.ati.com).
