Favourite hangouts?

Post #1by Evil Dr Ganymede » 04.03.2004, 01:20

I'm just curious as to where people like to hang out in Celestia, when they're in the mood.

I often like accompanying the minor body 15874 on its long, lonely voyage through the outermost depths of the solar system. It's on a very nifty centaurs/tno ssc file that I found, and I've unfortunately long since forgotten who made it (he might be called JACK?), and this particular body really goes out into the sticks - its aphelion is around 135 AU!

It's nice to zoom things up, centre on Sol, and watch the solar system get really small... :)

How about everyone else? What are the sights you often like to see?

Well, to be honest, lately I've been hanging out in the sticks. You know, waaaaay far out. Around a Z of 1000 or more.

i.e. I've been working on some more deep-space catalogs. :)

When closer to home, I often like to visit Dactyl and watch Ida tumble in the sky.

Most of my hangouts tend to be around a nebula or in the core of some distant galaxy....as long as its a billion light years from Earth its all good...
I'm trying to teach the cavemen how to play scrabble, its uphill work. The only word they know is Uhh and they dont know how to spell it!

I like riding 'onboard' with all the major solar system spacecraft tours. Pioneers, Voyagers, Galileo, and of course the latest, Cassini.

I really like Saturn fly-bys, ( even with the current ring rendering and shadows  ). I also like 'moon hopping' around all the gas giants, especially Saturn.
At the moment I'm constantly checking on Cassini, for it's current position from Saturn....

....Then again I also like Mars, and hop on board Odyssey and MGS regularly for some spectacular views....

.....can't forget flying through Nebulae either, very soothing 8) ....

...and finally my most frequented place is Earth and especially on the surface at 1.7833 degrees west, 53.65 degrees north, where I often look at the night sky. :D

This is a leftfield hangout, but I like Uranus. Its bland appearance is strangely restful. Plus, the moons are closer together than those of the other gas giants, so you get interesting conjunctions. I recommend it... 8)

Neried does it for me, its elliptical orbit usually gives some variety. Big blue Neptune spinning away; close, far away then close again, Triton going against the flow...

Sometimes I'll orbit something with the right mouse button, press F7 and see what star lights up first. Iapatus is a nice hangout too.

One of my favorites spots is the asteroid Toutatis. It doesn't have a single principle rotation axis, so when you sync orbit to fix yourself to the surface and speed up time, the sky spins wildly overhead.

I enjoy hanging around Cordelian orbit near Uranus; its fun to travel through the rings and the lesser known moons.

You guys are all poets. :P

I love strange, dark and "small" objects, far away from Earth, like brown dwarfs, pulsars, a black hole (only one ?), or I love to watch young planets covered with volcanoes and lava rivers.

I love lonely asteroids, lost somewhere in a fictious solar system.

I love to watch an artificial satellite or some fictious starship, in orbit around a strange looking planet full of mystery.

I love Mars.

*raises hand* :) Glad you like it...

Interplanetary spacecraft, especially the lesser known ones... (You'd never guess it from my website  ) I love flybys, and I also love the Earth and Mars. Realism is my big thing, i'm not all that into the sci-fi addon worlds etc.

Asteroids, small bodies etc I find very interesting too, especially those that have had close encounters with spacecraft...

(I vote for Wild-2 being included as standard with celestia, by the way!)
