i've looked thru the guide.doc, and don't find the answer; i get the idea that there are earth/city texture's but the closer to earth i get the fuzzier the view becomes. i've noticed that the hires folder is empty. should that be so? right click on an object doesn't give an alternate texture option. i've got v1 3 1. any info would be appreciated. it's an awesome start. tom t

Tom,

Frank's "guide.doc" is designed to explain how to use Celestia, not how to enhance it.

You might want to take a look at the Web page http://www.lns.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/addon-intro.html, which tries to describe how to use and create some kinds of Addons. You'll also want to look at http://www.lns.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/textures.html

The surface textures that are included with Celestia are relatively low resolution. Even so, they add up quickly. They are what make the download over 15MB. The code for Celestia itself is less than 2MB.

The hires directory included with Celestia does come empty. You're expected to obtain or create your own addon high resolution surface texture images.

The high resolution screenshots you may have seen in some of the postings here or on the Web are created using what are called Addons. Some of those Addons are extremely large. The BlueMarble and associated surface textures for the Earth total 975MB on my system, for example, although the individual Zipped downloads are smaller.

Despite their size, the highest resolution images available for Celestia don't quite get close enough to show city streets except for a very few locations that some people have worked on.

Some Web sites where you can download high resolution surface textures for Celestia of the Earth and Mars are
"Jim" Jens' Web page at http://home.arcor.de/jimpage/
Don Edwards' Web page at http://www.shatters.net/~impulse/
and the NASA Web page at http://exp.arc.nasa.gov/hires/

There are quite a few other pages with hires images, too. Hopefully some other people will be able to provide links to a few of them..

Does this help?

The free images available for street level detail are patchy and hard to find. Some good ones are available here
http://earthetc.com/
look under 'Earth Imagery' you'll need to install an ecw plugin to view them though. Also a few mapsites have aerial photos, like 'multimap.com' for Britain,'mapquest' used to have photos for parts of USA but lately I cant find them.It is quite a bit of work to translate these images into 'Celestia' though.Good luck Jestr
