FREE Web Host - USA/Canada

Post #1by don » 20.01.2004, 23:24

Since folks have asked about free web hosts in the past ...

1and1.com is offering 3 YEARS of free web hosting (offer expires Jan 21).
* 500 MB / 5 GB
* cgi bin
* FTP
* Lots of extras

See their site for details (http://www.1and1.com/).
Seems like a decent deal, but I've not fully explored it.

Sorry, that's why I wrote "USA/Canada" in the message subject. Unfortunately, their sign-up system is phone number based, allowing only ONE account per phone number. Their automated response system calls you and provides a PIN number which is then used to activate an account.

By the way, some of my friends are using other "inexpensive" (less than $10 US per month) web hosts and seem to like them ...

Well I signed up for it so I can take some of the load off of Shatters.Net server. I will be moving some of my textures over soon. I won't remove the textures from the shatters.net server but I will e changeing the links. So i guess we shall just see how this turns out. :wink:

BTW, 1&1 (http://www.1und1.de/) is a big german webhoster - apparently they are looking for new markets ;) Don't know what they will be like in the US, but over here they are pretty reliable, have good value for money (though not cheap) and fair conditions.

Howdy Harald,

Their web site says ... "1&1 is proud to be both the world’s biggest web host, and the fastest growing. Our global community is 2.5 million people strong and 2500 new customers sign up every day."

That's a two-edged sword, as many know. I'm sure their data centers are located in Europe, as their location is *never* mentioned anywhere (that I looked) due to the slowness of the connection. My ISP has pinging disabled, so I can't run traceroute either <sigh>.

I signed up for a test to see how it goes. I don't expect too much, since this is a FREE account <smile>.

Cheers,

-Don G.

http://www.1and1.com is somewhere in the US, probably somewhere near NY. Of course I don't know if they are hosting their US-customers there too, but I hope so - at least if they want more US-customers ;) Of course we will soon now, I would like to hear how it goes...
