Digest

Is there any way to get a digest of all postings on this forum on a day-by-day basis? I have checked the FAQ and the phpbb.com site but I can not find a way to get notified about new postings.
And checking the forum every day for new postings is cumbersome, especially here in Europe; it is really slow.
The option that comes most close to what I want is 'View all postings since your last visit', but since I sometimes stay online for quite a while, that does not really help either.
I really would like to know what is new on the forum. I even missed the announcement of the 1.3.1 version... (thanks Chris!)

I know this topic does not really belong here, but where else to put it?

I use the following commands when Shatters is running slowly. Of course, it also adds to the traffic problem...

Select "search for unread messages since last time" and wait for the new search results page.

"right-mouse-button-click" and "open in new window" on the "read last update" icon (the tiny icon at the far right, after the name of the person who posted the response) for all of the messages I want to read, working from the bottom up to the top of the search page. This leaves the search page open, and I do not wait for any of the new browser windows to finish opening.

After I've clicked on them all, I go back and start reading the first message. It's usually finished downloading by that time.

I leave the search window open. When I want to check for any new postings, I note the timestamp on the top message and then select the "reload" button. The new search results page often includes the same messages as before, but newer ones will be at the top of the page.

Sort of. As you can read in my message I already use the "view posts since last visit". The right-click method is a nice addition (I already used this for the various forums at Shatters, to keep the list of messages open. Using it for the search results is helpful).

It still is not ideal. What is ideal is what happened just now: I got a mail telling me that you had read and answered my post. At Yahoo this is standard: you can set it to ALWAYS get a mail when someone posts a message, also when it is not a reply to a message of yourself.
But then again, this is not Yahoo... (for some obvious reasons I am glad it ain't...)

The problem with mail is that if you have say 1000 registered users and 100 new posts per day, that would make 100,000 outgoing mails/day!

Even just one digest/user/day would be a lot.

I still think the best way to handle this issue is to use the NewsSync NNTP gateway for phpBB. NNTP was designed for online forums, the Web wasn't.

No, nothing you can do yourself. It's up to the administrator to install an NNTP server and the phpbb NewsSync mod.

That's not that easy and probably quite time consuming to set up right, we all would better have Chris work on Celestia than on setting up forums!

I just wish phpbb had an NNTP interface included in its default installation.
