Hi all.
I'm now getting better at all this Celestia stuff and was wondering if anyone has yet modelled the Ringworld system yet.

If not then I think that I'll have a go.. Presuming that Celestia (and myself) can handle it!

What do you think? Stupid? Or what?

If you do a forum search on "Ringworld" you'll find several relevant threads. This seems to be the main one.

Ive just uploaded the latest version of my ringworld that has been sitting on my hard disk for a while. The surface texture still needs some work however.

Sorry to spoil your fun Greg, if your still keen I think that the puppeteers planet's would be a nice little project.
If i remember correctly it was five planets orbiting each other in a keplers rosette.

No Worries..

:)

Guessed it would have been done..

Anyway, I got carried away in 3d studio, spending hours trying to get the Fist of God mountain "just so" and in the end gave up.

The Puppeteer fleet of worlds sounds like a good thing to try though.

(edit - sorry Grant - yes, I should have searched the board first. Sorry!)

Can't find HD 512

Marc,
I installed the Ringworld, but your instructions say to go to HD 512 - I can't seem to find that catalog listing in Celestia (Enter, type "HD 512") - help, please?
Thanks

Lorin,
The star should be there in a standard Celestia.

Lorin,

I just tested Celestia v1.3.1pre11, v1.3.0 and v1.2.5 and they all include HD 512.

Are you remembering to type the space between the HD and the 512?

[Enter]
HD 512[Enter]

It's also named HIP 772, so

[Enter]
HIP 772[Enter]

should work, too.

Does this help?

Celestia won't offer a match at this point - are you hitting Enter again after typing the catalogue number? That should bring up the star for you.

HD 512

Thanks, Selden, Grant and Marc: I must be doing something wrong, although I'm doing the same thing I normally do - I hit enter before and after entering the catalog number, and there's a space between HD and 512 - but HD 512 doesn't display in the upper left corner of the screen and G(o) doesn't take me there - the engine displays about 8 "HD..." matches but 512 isn't one of them. I'll try "HIP 772." Thanks, all! --Lorin

HD 512 will not show up in the auto completion. If it did there would be thousands in there.

Does it take you to a star at all? Perhaps you have extracted the file to the wrong place.

To make it easier to find I should give the star a name, but I cannot remember if the name of the star was ever mentioned in the book.
The only description was "A G3V star 200ly above the galactic plane".
Can anyone provide a quote?

The star had a catalogue number, too: here's a definition I provided on an earlier thread:

Code: Select all

300000 "EC-1752:Ringworld"
{
RA 192.25
Dec 27.4
Distance 201
SpectralType "G3V"
AbsMag 4.89
}

Thanks Grant, I must never have clicked last time I read that.
Ill use it for the next version.

My fault entirely

I'm embarassed to admit it but it's entirely my fault - HD 512 does show selected in the upper left of the screen and I can indeed G(o) to it: I had forgotten that in Celestia the NumPad keys don't work as numbers... argh. Great looking addon! I even tried Go-ing to the surface, and the view is stunning.

Thanks all for your input - I'm sorry to have wasted your time.
