But what exactly does the asterisms.dat file do? I've seen messages describing how a new asterisms.dat file is available, but I'm at a loss to know why this is important.
Have tried to scan all the documentation I have, but with not much luck.
Can someone explain this file to me please?
Thanks, Bob

Bob,
Asterisms are groups of stars that give the visual impression that they're associated with one another.
Asterisms.dat contains lists of stars that give the visual impression that they're associated with one another. Celestia draws lines joining the listed stars. In other words, asterisms.dat defines the constellation figures.
The International Astronomical Union has standardized the borders of the constellations, but not the figures. There are quite a few variations among them, and different people have their own favorites.
For the science fictional minded, one could use this feature to depict interstellar traderoutes.
Does this help?
