locations "postcard"

Hi all,
I've been enjoying looking around for contenders for my world wonders location list; the locations themselves are a bit disappointing, no matter how big the virtual textures, its not going to work on something like, for example the Angel Falls. What I'd like to do is make available a postcard type picture at the appropriate location. (here I'm drifting off, thinking if Celestia supported gifs, you could have one of those waterfall pictures that many chinese restaurants have...) How to do this without linking outside of celestia is the thing...
I've considered putting in pictures as tiles at level 9 or 10, but can't convert to dds to try it, alternatively, more complicatedly, making a model, and applying the pictures to that, then treating it as a craft, parked in a synchronous orbit at the surface, this is going to need an ssc too, and would have to be selected away from the location itself.
Anyone like this idea? Think of a better way to do it ? Would it be straightforward to do? All help much valued.
regards ziggy

Hi ziggy,

Yep, this is definately the next step for Virtual Textures -- places of interest. Some may love the idea, while others may hate it.

Personally, I think a special level (or multiple levels) of VTs could be "pre-assigned" for things like this. For example, level 80 (need to leave more levels for caves, mines, etc.). But, where does it stop? I mean, you could go to your city, then to your neighborhood, then to your property, then to your house, then to a room in your house, etc., etc.

At what point does Celestia cease to be a space exploration program and become a "virtual tour of Earth and everything on it" program?

Chris, can you give us any idea as to where you want to take Celestia? For example, out (further into space), or in (further into more detail of the Earth)?

IMHO we should concentrate more on the deep sky stuff, Solar System is pretty well covered in Celestia now.

That would be insane

How about something "general" surface, for example when landing on certain type of terrain, for example forest, sea, glacier, boulder field on asteroid surface etc. landscape of that type is shown. It should be somehow repeatable, going forward on surface it creates illusion of continuous landscape.
