Hello to all,

I'm joining the forum today because I just discovered the great
Celestia on the Chris' site...
I'm from France, aged 36, married, 1 daughter.
Since i was a Kid, i always like astronomy and Celestia give me
virtually one of my dream : travel into Space...

I have a problem : When I select "Night Visions" for Earth, that doesn't change on screen . I checked the solarsys.scc file and the the night texture ".jpg" is in "medres" directory...

I also look for a good Star Wars' Coruscant planet's medres JPG surface ?

What version of Celestia are you running?

Are you viewing the dark portion of the Earth, or the sun-lit portion? The view night-side lights function adds night-time lights to the part of the Earth where the sun is not currently shining on it.

Selden's List of Resources for Celestia, at http://www.lepp.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/ is a good place to start when looking for add-ons and textures.

I run the 1.3.0 version.
I confirm that I look at the night portion of the globe, but no lights...
maybe my computer isn't as powerful as Celestia needs for that.
All options works (orbits, constels etc...) but not the "nightlights" one
I alst tried Thomas Guilpain's Coruscant add-on, which also has a
night lights texture, and that doesn't work too.

Thank you for the link, I already downloaded Pioneer 10 & 11 and
Voyager 1 & 2 add-ons, this is great to travel to solar system with
these so-loved probes

Hi Chris,

Would you tell us what type of computer and graphics card you have? CPU, speed, RAM, etc. and graphics card mfg. and model#. It might also help if you could post the information displayed when you select Help / Open GL Info (just select and copy the text, then paste it into a message). I'm not an OpenGL expert, but some folks here are.

What also amazed me using Celestia is watching Earth during the
total solar eclipse on 11th august 1999 : The moon shadow is
showed at the good place

While running Celestia, try typing a Control-V several times to see what "Render Paths" Celestia thinks it can use. If it only shows "Basic", then you are out of luck. NightTexture will show up only if "MultiTexture" is possible. If "Multitexture" is displayed, then that's when the night-time lights should be seen.

Also, you have rather limited memory. Maybe your system just doesn't have room for the Earth's NightTexture along with all the other surface textures. You might try disabling all the "medres" textures. If you rename the folder \celestia\textures\medres to something else (mabye \medresNO\ for example) then Celestia won't be able to find it and will load only the lores textures, which are much smaller.

For what it's worth, OpenGL V1.1.1 provides only rather limited 3D capabilities. More of Celestia's "eye candy" become available with more recent versions of OpenGL. Unfortunately, this would require you to upgrade both your computer and the graphics card.
