I personally like to have every known moon in the solar system... (that even includes asteroids with moons!!

What level of interest do you have in viewing minor named & numbered moons...?

I agree, although I have left out a few of the HUGE asteroid files because they slow down my computer so much.

I totally agree with you Jack, since I have the standard minormoons.scc and your tiny moons ssc file.. I try to keep it up to day when new ones are discovered or renamed

I went to each of the gas giants, right clicked the planet, opened the satellites menu, and did a little count to see about how many moons I had. I got 110 for Jupiter, 44 for Saturn, 20 for Uranus, and 14 for Neptune. Is this right?

No. You must have done some sort of double installation if you have 110 moons around Jupiter.
I'd guess you've got the Celestia minormoons.ssc plus numberedmoons.ssc (which give the full complement between them), and then something or other of Jack's in there on top of that lot.

Ok I took all of the moon files I could find out, so now i'm down to 5 moons, which are the default ones in the solarsys.ssc file. now the files i have for gas giant moons are: gasgiantsminormoons, JACKtiny_or_new_moons, jupiter_small_satellites, and minormoons. which should i keep and which should I delete?

I'm getting closer, I'm down to 78, that is, after I deleted the gasgiantsminormoons file. That was pretty much a duplicate of JACKtiny_or_new_moons. Is that right?

I've never heard of most of these. The "official" Celestia files are minormoons.ssc and numberedmoons.ssc. Between them, they cover the whole lot.
Jack, I think, maintains his own file corresponding to numberedmoons.ssc - it did once have a degree of overlap with minormoons.ssc, but I think that was fixed (am I right, Jack?)
So you should at most have minormoons.ssc plus either numberedmoons.ssc or Jack's equivalent, which he can keep you right on.
If you do want to use numberedmoons.ssc, then give the CVS tree a chance to update with the new file I just sent it and then download numbermoons.ssc from there, since Chris's link on the Add-Ons webpage is to an old file (and will stay that way, I imagine, until a definitive new Celestia release).
Your totals should end up as Jupiter 61, Saturn 31, Uranus 21 and Neptune 11 (a numerologist's delight!)

I'll do that, but one thing, where is the CVS tree?

here, i have updated some of the recent name too, and are in order of distance.
(Except for the s/2003 asterois wich are yet to be named)

I have this as a separate file in my extras folder, named Jupiter-Stalites.ssc

I combined all the moons from the main solarsys.ssc, minormoons.ssc, and numberedmoons.ssc into one file for each planet.

Here's where to go for numberedmoons.ssc, and you can explore around from there. http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/celestia/celestia/extras/. At present it's still showing the previous update date for numberedmoons.ssc, so you'll need to check back in a while.

Well, that's a surprising result!!

I didn't expect so many people would be interested in all those minor moons...!

Me too, instead I just pick & choose which asteroids I have!

For EVERY single known moon in the solar system, the ONLY two files you need are:

The standard minormoons.ssc

and

numberedmoons.ssc (from CVS) OR my tiny_or_new_moons.ssc

They're both almost exactly the same, except I think mine is in an easier to read format. I keep a seperate version because some people (including myself) don't have a clue about how to work the CVS thing without a direct link to the file... Also unless you're involved in celestia development it's unlikely you'll visit the sourceforge project page regularly, and I always announce new additions here on the addons forum!

That's the tiny_or_new_moons.ssc file. I started it just for fun- but it doesn't take much effort to keep it up to date... so why not?!

You're right, it used to overlap with minormoons.ssc, but about 2 months ago (whenever I updated it last) I fixed that problem. On the page where you download it from, theres now a notice (it's been there a while) saying that it's just an extra addon for minormoons.ssc, and not intended as a replacement.

Ok i've updated my "other xyz's & ssc's" page, and i've changed the readme on the tiny moons ssc file, to help out people with duplicates of moons etc... The bit on the page is the same as in the new readme. It's in red so you can't miss it

Ok jack, I downloaded your tiny moons file and i have the minor moons file, but now i'm down to 50 moons for jupiter, 31 moons for saturn, 19 moons for uranus and 11 moons for neptune. i know that something is still wrong, so i'm going to reinstall celestia to get a fresh copy of the minormoons file. I fear I may ave at some point made some changes to it. I'm getting there, almost there anyway.

That sounds ok for Uranus...

S/1986 U10 was a small grey speck seen by Voyager 2... It's never been oficially recognised as a moon (I think) but I included it in my moons file anyway, just in case...

You seem to have come to the rigth number.

There are a diffent between Numberedmoons.ssc and Jack_Tiny_or_new_moons.ssc where Jack has "S/1986 U10" in his.

I have made a script to make the moons, base on minormoons.ssc and numberedmoons.ssc. See Forum Scripting.
I have work on a script to mark the moons for minormoons.ssc and Jack_Tiny_or_new_moons.ssc, but I can't mark the "S/1986 U10".
