I'm offering FREE webspace for textures made for Celestia...

Post #1by CrookedScepter » 16.07.2003, 00:58

I have a bit of webspace thats going pretty much unused (250megs), and I'd like to put it to use instead of letting it sit there and do nothing.

SOoo, I'd like to offer a place for those who make/improve textures used in Celestia so everyone here doesn't have to run around 20 different sites looking for all them.

So, if you want to have your texture posted on this page :

http://www.MediaSpeedBump.com/Celestia

This page will be up and running in a few days for now it doesnt exist yet.

This site is going to be just a center for textures, (and maybe a few addons in the future) I'm not trying to steal anyone's thunder or whatever. Also, that page won't have any banners or pop-ups, so you can relax on that.

FIRSTLY BEFORE SENDING ANYTHING, Post a message in this thread stating that you are sending a (zipped please) texture pack to make sure that I don't miss your email (I gets ton-o-spam) and I don't want to delete your message accidently and have you hate me for an eternity and a half :)

The textures don't have to be super great, just as long as they have had good effort put into them- thats the only catch ;)

I hope offering this helps out celestia's site and maybe those who can't afford to get webspace of their own.

Any takers?

I may be able to swing 350megs, but how much would zipping take it down?

Oh, wait- I forgot...

Post #5by CrookedScepter » 17.07.2003, 00:20

I totally forgot that my host only allows files to be posted up to 10megs each, if there were a way to chop up that texture zip wise, then I'll be able to do that...

Please say you can do that (who ever made that texture) I really want that badly :)

why not just split it using Winrar?
That works. you could zip it with rar then split it into 8.5 or 10 megabyte segments.

Standard winzip can split files too! choose the number of parts or else what size you want each to be

I don't have Winzip installed right now.I haven't for a year I didn't want any extra space on my computer taken since XP comes with a built in zipping program.
I did not know winzip can do that, I suggested rar because CrookedScepter said he couldn't split it with winzip.

Winrar is a shareware program. You must purchase it after 40 days of use. There are a lot of free splitting/joining tools (for Windows, of course, Linux include the command split  ). For example (after a quick look at FreeWare World Team (http://www.all4you.dk/FreewareWorld/links.php):

A.F.6 Split: http://www.fauland.com/af6.htm
This utility makes a clean splitting, joinable both in Windows and Linux (and Mac, I hope). It points also to the Joining utility.

There are a lot more. I use Hjsplit&Lxsplit, for example.

BTW, its curious that the place where I found FWT, a spanish site cited today in the spanish version of Slashdot (http://www.barrapunto.com), includes Celestia as part of its software selection. Look at here (near the end of the page):

http://www.cdlibre.org/consultar/cd_winlin01/programas.html

Are someone of you the administrator of this page?

I didn't download it off any illegal sites.
I got it from theirs. I'm just saying it hasn't asked me to register or anything.

Everytime you open the program:

Quote:

"Please Register"

Please note that Winrar is shareware.
After a 40 day trial period you must either
register it or remove it from your computer.

Online Registration
Price list
sites list
Close

End of Quote.

But I haven't problems at all!! I just use Linux unrar when I receive a rar compressed file, even split!

Winzip-

Days Installed: 457 Total Archives opened: 405

Your 21-day evaluation period has expired

Ive seen things like this on more than a few computers- in fact i don't think i've ever seen a registered version of winzip

If they wanted people to buy it they should at least stop it working after 21 days otherwise what incentive do you have to buy?

Anyway... moving swiftly along- this is getting highly off topic
