This question has come up a lot of times. The largest version of earth is the blue marble texture from nasa. It's 28800x14400 pixels large. You do need special tools though to edit it, cuz without 3 gigs of memory there is no way you can open it in windows. Photoshop doesn't even allow images larger than 20000 to be opened.
Use the search. I don't know the exact place.
You can always to to

I think he may be asking for a texture already made for Celestia
And the largets i have seen so far is a 16k Blue marble by Pixel or Dasminov (i think)
but i cannot find the link anymore, it was just an ftp list rather than a web page
Anyone know the link ?

Here's the link to Dasmirnov's ftp:
ftp://ftp.dasmirnov.net/astronomy/celestia/textures/
The Earth16k.dds texture is in the Pixel directory.

Redfish,
That is simply not true. I can open that NASA 28800x14400 texture without any problem. I have 1.5gb of RAM but I have allotted a very big virtual memory space allocated. I was even able to work on the texture and resize it to 16,384x8192. If you can't open the texture than I suspect another problem. Now if you talking about 28800x28800 textures than I half to disagree again because I can open those as well. Well that is only partly true. The west half of the 28800x2880 texture is fine but each time a download the east half it is corrupted. So I haven't been able to try those.
Don.

You asked for a
yes/no answer, hmm...
If I answer you with
yes, this may be incorrect, since you may have a slow modem connected to your machine.
If I answer with
no, this may again be wrong, since you may have a fast DSL line.
So what do you want me to answer without knowing your download speed;-)
Moreover, did you check whether your graphics card can handle "monster" textures at all?
What have you got?
Bye Fridger

Sorry, I did sounds a little shekky-ish with that. I know beggars cant be choosers- but still, I was just seeing if there was a faster download available
I have a DSL modem btw....
Peace

Alan Federman has kindly provided a high bandwidth hires mirror site at
http://exp.arc.nasa.gov/hires/.
As a result, Paul "DASmirnov" Smith has discontinued his low bandwidth ftp server. Unfortunately, the NASA site doesn't include the 16K textures

Well
Don Edwards is working on a 16k Earth Texture right now
view the topic here

If he completes this with great success, he may make a 16 bit version of his mars texture too...
if you hound him a little

Please don't hound me.
I have the resources to build a 16k Mars textures but unfortunately I am obligated not to release anything I do with them.
SORRY GUYS!
It was part of deal I made to get them in the first place. Mario was kind enough to let me have access to his 23K Mars stuff but I had to agree not to release any of them as competition against his textures. Now I could try and email him and see if he might let me release a 16k version as it’s still not his full 23k version, and he doesn't release textures at that size anyway. But he has been working with Fridger on Mars stuff so I have no idea what they are up to. They may start releasing textures at the native Celestia sizes at any time. And Mario has announced a whole bunch of new Mars textures at his site Space-Graphics.com in the near future so I think this just may be the stuff he and Fridger have been collaborating on.
Besides my 8k Mars texture has had mixed reviews so to speak. Allot of you including Fridger felt the coloring was the best yet from me. But I have heard from one or two users that they felt the coloring was to red and to dark. I tried to explain that it has a great deal to do with witch renderers you use.
So for now it looks like 8k is the best Mars I can do.
Don.
