do you use it? does it make it more real?

I always use it, because i think it looks a bit more real, but also because it slows down my celestia a bit when they're not rendered as points.

I don't use "stars as points" because it makes them almost invisible. In fact, I'd like to see an option that lets the viewer increase the luminosity differences even more -- something like what's available in PartiView.

That would be nice, yes!
Something available in a future minor release of Celestia perhaps????

I use stars as points, but I agree with Selden. And the Chris proposal is fantastic. This feature would be very very nice
.
I should call it schematic view or someting like this. Because it is not a realistic visualization but instead something that should help in understanding astronomy. Would be nice if the feature should be splitted in two types of visualizations: one that gives precedence for the apparent magnitude and one for the absolute magnitude.
Using this "schematic view", looking at sun from very far distance (e.g. 20-50 light years) should give to the observer a precise idea of the stellar neighborhoods around our system. Actually it is impossibile because of faintness of stars.
I have a lot of other ideas about this argument (schematic view), but I want to collect and present them organically.
I will create soon a new group of feature requests on my website.

I don't use the 'stars as points' option - I think they look better as textures...and they twinkle...very nice.
I guess it depends on your setup.
Do the stars 'twinkle' viewed from space?..... There must be some ex astronauts on this forum...surely!
Regards...bh.

To bh,
Perhaps I'm wrong but if I remeber well the stars twinke viewed from earth because the wind in the higher leves of the atmosphere is sufficient to create perceptible distortions to the light paths. So viewed from space they don't twinkle at all.

I have installed the last 1.3.1 pre6 prerelease, and the option
"Stars like points"
is no more available.
This is due to the new system shown by Chris, or a bug?
Thank you
Andrea

Pre6 has 3 ways to show stars, so it got moved out of the View options box to the Render menu, option "Star Style"
Control-S (under WinXP on US keyboard) selects among the 3 modes: points, fuzzy & disks.

Selden, sorry for my missed check on the Render Menu, but I was so used to the View Menu that ....
Thank you very much
.
