galaxies and clusters

Is it possible to put star systems of one's own design into other galaxies? Right now one can't zoom into them...

Also, I tried installing the globular cluster program from Rassilon's website, along with the textures to go with it, and nothing changed when I ran the setup program. The setup program ran, but no textures were added, no NGC 2244, none of the stuff in the new ssc files could be found when I ran Celestia. Anyone know how to get this working?

The current version of Celestia can only handle stars to a distance of about 16,000 light years.
I updated the "preliminary faq" yesterday with a link to the thread which discusses the reasons for the limitation.

I haven't tried using it for a while. As I recall, SETUP.EXE only installs the generator. It doesn't create any ssc or stc files. That's done by the cluster generator program that it installs, CLUSTER.EXE

Unfortunately both programs were written long enough ago that they don't understand the new directory structure that add-ons should be using now. Check to make sure that the ssc, stc and texture files are in directories that are in appropriate locations relative to one another.

What's the version number of your copy of CLUSTER.EXE and/or its date? I have several different versions on my system left over from when he was developing it that I could compare it with, and I'm reluctant to install it yet again.

The ZIP file containing SETUP.EXE doesn't include any of the texture files. They're in separate zip files. You need to download the two texture paks below it on the Web page. Be warned: they're 36MB and 12MB.

From my experience using the program you do not have to make any changes to the directory structure when using the addon planet textures in correlation to the cluster generated stc/ssc files. Just run the program as usual and it should work fine. As far as the addons, the same will apply.

Also remember as selden stated you must download and install all of the addon texture packs including the ngc 2244 system pack to get it to work completely. If you choose to not use the alien planets just delete the ssc files and it will run fine.

sorry: I didn't mean to imply that it wouldn't work (although obviously upon rereading it sounds that way), just that the resulting files have to be in "appropriate directories", whatever that means in your personal Celestia configuration.

e.g. Celestia won't look in the data directory for stc or ssc files. They have to be in the extras or a subdirectory under it, but not in a textures or models directory. I'm starting to realize just how confusing all the combined possibilities for the workable file locations are for someone new to Celestia. But that's one reason I wrote the "intro" page, which suggests one organization that works with the new Celestia features. *sigh*
