Last time I tried celetstia it was a joy to behold. This was only a few versions ago.

Now it runs at like .5 fps.

Needs some tune ups or somethin.

what are your systems specs?

Try turning off some of the things that are listed in the menu "Render | View Options..."

Celestia's performance often depends on which "View Options" you have enabled. Many of the new features use OpenGL routines that older cards don't have in hardware. Their drivers use software routines instead. That makes things very slow.

For example, Rage cards do "Multitexture" in software. This feature is used by the View Option "Night Side Lights". Turning that off makes a *big* difference when looking at the Earth.

Also, if you have a slow CPU, Viewing "Galaxies" will be very slow, and so will having lots of stars on the screen at once.

a) You are in the wrong department
b) In the right department (Bugs) only peole that give their system specs are listened too.
c) With almost 800 registered users and several active developers you might have had the idea that the slow down is your problem not that of the 800 users and the developers;-). Don't you think we would have realized that slow-down too if it was Celestia's problem?
d) What exactly was your idea how we should react to this message of yours that contains virtually ZERO information?

well, i have actually experienced quite a bit of slowing down since the release of 1.3.0, but then again, i keep adding nebulas, models, HUGE asteroid cataloges, ect.

With several responses it appears I was listened to.

c) With almost 800 registered users and several active developers you might have had the idea that the slow down is your problem not that of the 800 users and the developers;-). Don't you think we would have realized that slow-down too if it was Celestia's problem?

Every other game plus several high end applications such as XSI and Avid DV xpress work just fine on my system.

Dual PIII 1 ghz, 512 MB RAM, GeForce 3 64 mb, Windows XP.

Exactly the response I received.

I actually developed some code with celestia, and intend to take a gander at the code as soon as time permits to see if I can locate the problem.

As an AI programmer, graphics aren't my specialty, however, I think I can decipher it just fine.

Exactly the response I received.

You seem to be saying that it saves your time, if 3 to 4 users spend theirs with /guessing/ what your problem might be, without a proper bug report from your side...

An interesting attitude indeed for a /programmer/!

I have a single PIII 1Ghz/512MB RAM and an /old/ GeForce 2 GTS 32MB only and get 20 - 40 fps (!!!) in full screen 1600x1200/16bit with the /default/ setup of Celestia pre1.3.1/1.3.0. Both under XP and Linux, with the latest NVIDIA drivers, of course.

It is not a convincing (let alone professional) argument that 'every other game' runs normally on your machine. We do not talk about DirectX for example but about the proper /OpenGL/ hardware support with up-to-date drivers. I would rather have expected to get info from you about which version of OpenGL etc. your present driver supports (read out under Help).

By setting /full scene anti aliasing/ for example (accidentally?;-)) you might also dramatically slow down the speed of your oldish card.

Which /OpenGL/ games are running with normal speed on your card?
What about the standard OpenGL benchmarks?

In summary, so far everything points towards the problem being on your side.

With your configuration, you should not experience any slowdown. What I suspect is happening is that your OpenGL drivers got zapped (upgrading to XP SP 1 perhaps?) since you last used Celestia, and it is now running with software emulation. Since most game use Direct3D, you may not have noticed the problem until now. The solution is simple: select the 'OpenGL Info' option in the Help menu and check the text in the Window. If the renderer is 'Microsoft OpenGL 1.1' or something similar, you're running in software emulation--go to http://www.nvidia.com, download new drivers, install them, and you'll have hardware accelerated 3D again.

I wasn't attempting to CONVINCE anything. I had some issues. Only person I needed to convince was myself.

Perhaps your own "Professional" responses could be more towards assisting rather than pointing out my faults. That is IF you are so much more professional than I.

The problem was indeed my own. I tried it on my other system and everything worked fine. So I removed NView and instant gratification.
