Celestia not booting with addons

As a recent problem I've encountered recently, Celestia does not want to boot only when I have addons installed. Another oddity of this from various testing with the addon set I have for 1.6.2 (as my 1.6.1 addon set exceeds 1.7GBs in size) I tested them in various older versions of Celestia and managed to get along with 1.6.2 crashing as soon while still loading STC files 1.6.1 and 1.6.0 do the exact same. While on 1.4.1, 1.5.0, and 1.5.1 (which I also tested) booted completely fine and had no other problems. How I can also tell it something in relation to do with addons is a spare copy of 1.6.1 and 1.6.2 I have on an external drive with no addons boot fine and the exact contents of the addon files the Celestia stops on are not of issues as they work fine but I do not know what would be root cause of this since nothing seems to be lining up nor are there any error messages to give me any sort of clue. All I know is that the afflicted versions stop while loading STC files.

The exact STC files the versions stop on.
Also, the exact behavior Celestia has at this point is 1.6.2 just immediately quits while 1.6.1 and 1.6.0 stop loading (and display the regular mouse pointer instead of the busy one when I move the mouse of the splash) and idle using up to 50% of my laptop's CPU.
Too many addons installed?

Try to remove some addons

i doubt that it has anything to do with the total addon size, because my well over 3 GB addon set works fine on 1.6

Same here. My downloaded addons are 4.57 GB in total now across two different Celestia versions (1.6.2 and 1.7.0) and both still work perfectly fine for me

Only time I had a point where Celestia has not booted due to a large volume of add-ons was with a 2019 Alpha build of 1.7.0.

While testing that, the Windows Command Prompt in itself gave nothing.
While Cygwin (after getting it to read a directory with the exe properly) gave me this error specifically for 1.6.2 at least.

Reinstall Celestia.

That was one of the first things I did, it still did the exact same thing as soon as I put the addons back.

1. See in Celestia.cfg (should be in the same directory as Celestia.exe):
Code: Select all
ExtrasDirectories ["extras-standard" "extras" "lua-applications"]
and look if your extras directory is listed.
If it is not listed, add it and restart Celestia.
If the problem isn't gone or if the extras folder is listed, continue with method 2.
2. Check if one addon causes that error: Disable portions of addons until the problem is gone.
3. If method 2 fails, maybe the graphic card driver is outdated.

1: I tested in 1.6.0 it did the same thing and I have never changed the config file for it.
2: I've tested the addons it stops on, there are fine.
3: The graphics on this computer are from 2007 and Celestia does not care. Only Celestia version that does not work on said graphics is 1.7.0 due to render paths below OpenGL 2.0 are depreciated.

The last solution I know is to reinstall Windows.

That is excessive to deal with a program issue.

Reset Celestia to the state as it was before the errors occurred.

I noticed you have a joystick error in the terminal output, have you unplugged that joystick and restarted celestia ?

The cygwin screenshot also says "Couldn't load localizated resources: locale\res_LANGUAGE.dll" twice.

The thing is, I do not have any joystick plugged in. The only external devices I have plugged in are a mouse and keyboard and unplugging those did nothing.

I performed the exact same method with another version, Cygwin spits that out no matter what.

Launch Celestia and press ~ (tilde) to open its log. Maybe there stands the problem(s).

When you want to use several versions of Celestia, you must have a folder in Program Files for each version.
1.5 1.6 1.6.1 1.6.2 ....
Each version has files that may not be compatible with another version
Each version must have its own celestia.cfg file
In the celestia.cfg file, you can note the path of many things so that they are common to all versions and do not have multiple copies on your disk.
data, extras, lua-applications, ... On the other hand, the other root folders cannot be made common (textures, models, ...)

They all are, I have each version's version number mentioned on the folder that contains each version's "Celestia" folder.
