Translation of celestia user guide in french

Hi all,

I have done a translation of the celestia user guide in french.

First thing, I would like to ask Frank Gregorio and Chris Laurel if they agree to do a translation of the guide.

Second thing, if the first one is ok, as :
- i am not a professional translator
- i am not a profesional astronomer
- i am not a professional guide maker
- i had some problems to understand completly some features

I'd like to know if some french contributors could help me finish this translation.

Doing the translation, I tried to stay the closest I could to the original guide (what a job you did Frank !). the only modification I made are :*
- add a plan to the doc
- change font to Arial
- add some specific paragraphs usefull for french (translation of the name of the planet for exemple)

If there any problem with this I can change it.

So, the file is available at http://mapage.noos.fr/nathaliebaer/doc-celestia.htm

(the file weight about 2.3 meg)

The file is in Word XP format, but i can save it to any earlier version if necessary.

Another thing came up while doing the translation : what about a localized version of celestia ? But maybe this should be in another thread.

Waiting for your comments.

Bye

Gordon

Hi Gordon,
Good effort, I am neither a n astronom nor a proffessional translater, but as a physicist using broken english in my job I at least can read your translation and react to it.

MB:

Please feel free to translate the Guide into French. Unfortunately, I can't read French so I cannot comment on it, but there are lots of European folks on this forum that can. I ask them to make sure the translation is accurate.

Thanks for doing this. It is certainly a big job to tackle. :)

This is a great translation Gordon. What a work! Kudos for you and Franck.
I didn't do a thorough review but here is what I noticed:
- you didn't update the TOC
- some other moons do not have the same name in english and french (ex: Europa = Europe)
- the default paper size should be A4 instead of Letter (tho I'm not sure if this because I usually use Letter, or if this feature pertains to the document itself)
- I would translate the light travel delay title in french as well: "Temps du trajet de la lumiere" or so
- usually french people are mad about the spelling: you missed a couple dashes and "s" throughout the document

Anyhow, great job! it deserves to be included on the download page for french speaking users, like Franck's versions.

Keep it up!

Dear Gordon:

Oops. My mistake. I didn't realize that your message was posted first.

Of course you can do it. I am sorry I got the names confused.

Frank : no problem, that's what I thaught it was !

Paul : Thx for your nice comments.

Other points :

- Spelling : I know. I have re-read the document again, find some of s and dashes but It still needs someone else than me to review it, hoppfully MB will do it. Anyone else is also welcome.

- I think the default size paper comes from your printer settings .

- TOC : done

- Europa : done

- Time TD : done

Bye.

Gordon,

Do you feel that your translation of the users' guide is ready to be put in the documentation section of shatters.net? As soon as I have your permission, I'll make an announcement on the Celestia front page.

Hi Chris,

For the moment it is still a draft version. As I said, I had some problem with some features (light time delay, things with vertex shading as i have an ATI card, ...) and I am sure they are still spelling mistakes; so it is really preferable to wait the review of MB before putting it on your site. He said he should have done it by monday... As soon as it is ready, we will tell you.

Really? I thought everybody was mad about that. So you english-speaking people do't car fore spelllllng?

PS: Si vous voulez je peux le relire, mais pas avant ce week-end... On verra si c'est encore n?cessaire.

Hello Guest,

Sure it would be great if you review the text but as you said it's certainly preferable for you to wait MB reviewed version of the document.

Gordon,
I just connect to the forum and saw the various points. First I tell you that I already rewiewed up to page 18, half of the job, therefore I should be able to send you the rewiewed version. I agree with the problems " des anglicismes " but this we cannot avoid them, since they are every where! By the way, since I use both Linux and Windows, I translated the Linux install.

I forgot to,tell you that I will send you MONDAY!
I will try to work a bit on the technical stuff that make problems for you. Some are very technical like vertex shaders etc. It is of no use to translate them, they can be explained but I am not sure it is the real place to do that
