Celestia 1.3.0 on RedHat 9.0 very slow.

Anyone got an idea why versions 1.3.0 and 1.2.5 run really slow on Redhat 9.0 but ran just fine on redhat 8.0. When I start the Demo, the system locks up solid. Any help would br greatly appreciated.

You may need to update your video card drivers to get full openGL support I am not running linux at the moment but in the past in redhat 8 and also mandrake and debian I have had to do this an easy way to tell is if you have any opengl games like tux that are also running very slugishly if at all NVIDIA has good linux support just wish they'd allow the linux developers a peek to make it even better. Why do people always think of Celestia being 'guilty' if their 3D hardware setup is not working!

I am sure, before trying Celestia, you have examined the proper working of your RedHat 9.0 3D hardware upgrade by means of the official XF86free tools

glxgears and glxinfo.

With glxgears you should get /several thousand fps/, if your hardware support works fine. I bet however, you messed something up in the upgrade and are running with software support only (Mesa)...

The output of glxinfo should contain the line

direct rendering: Yes

along with lots of info about the openGL extensions, your card supports etc.

Thanks for the direction. I also think the problem is with Redhat with regards as to how the video system is configured during the setup. As I am inexperienced with linux, I am slowly learning its finer points. So I'll keep playing with it until I figure it out. With regards to Celestia, It is a wonderful application that helps me keep things in perspective. Thanks again
