problem with the forum's time
i've got my computer's colck set to (about) 11:50AM. i just posted a message and it tells me i posted it at 12:27. i've got the thing in my profile set to the east coast (which is correct). any ideas? i think it may have had something to do with daylight savings time, but since it's an hour and a half off i odnt know

Thats interesting. Your post is timed at 9:46AM and its 9:08AM PST. Maybe something is up with the server. Chris will probably see this and coment on whats going on. Now lets see what time mine comes up as.

I noted the same problem, and another one: though I have logged with the option -login automatically at every connection-, this happens for a maximum of 2, 3 times, and next time I have to login again.
I have never given this information before because it's not a Celestia bug, but I have seen that many times Celestia users send anonimous messages and immediate correction after login, so may be the problem is common.

if you set the cookie life time to infinite in your browser then you should never have to log in again.
On a different subject, the forum itself seems really slow lately, (im talking the past week), The 'created this page in xx seconds' at the bottom of the page has often been in the thirty second range.
Can anyone else confirm this?

Chris shares the statters.net gateway with someone else.
Those others often run a peer-to-peer file sharing service.
When it's running, the response time getting through the Shatters gateway increases from less than 1/10 of a second to as much as 1.5 seconds. They've been running it nonstop for several days now
You can use traceroute (tracert under Windows) to see the effect.

Alas I have but given up trying to access the forum or gallery through the normal chanels. If you use http://63.224.48.65/forum/ or http://63.224.48.65/gallery/ to access the site its a little faster and for me at least most of the pictures load in the forum. I wish eveyone who posted pictures in the forum would use the http://63.224.48.65/youraccount/yourpic.jpg.....
instead of the ennui-shatters.net ot the http://www.shatters.net. Pictuters for the most part always load if they are accesse through the direct way. theres nothing more bothersome than trying to see something someone posted and the pictuture won't load due to the fact they used the front doors instead on the back so to speak.

A workaround is to add ennui to your system's local host table. That's usually searched first and avoids depending on shatters' nameservices.
Unfortunately, each person accessing ennui (aka http://www.shatters.net) needs to add this entry on their own system.
On Windows systems, edit the file
C:\SYSROOT\system32\drivers\etc\Hosts
(replace SYSROOT by the name of your system's root system directory. e.g. WINNT)
On Linux systems, edit the file /etc/hosts
In either case, at the bottom of the file add the line

Nope it doesn't. As I stated in the post if I access the site through either http://www.shater.net or ennui.shatters.net I get a very slow forum and a basicly usless gallery. I can only see images in the galley if I go through http:/63.224.48.65/gallery/ and I can get decent speed in the forum and see images in it if I use http:/63.224.48.65/forum/.
I have gone round and round on this with Chris so it seems to be something with the server conection. I have given up trying to access through the normal chanels and I will stick to my way. If you look at any of the pictures I post you will see that I always link to the picture through 63.224.48.65 as well. This way I can see the picture and I know it loads faster for other users. My comment on averybody using this adress instead is for the simple fact that half the time someone posts an image in the forum and it links to there storage or gallery through ennui.shatters.net or the http://www.shatters.net I can't see the blasted picture. I have to copy the adress of the picture and past it into another window and change the the line to 63.224.48.65/joeblow/picture21.jpg to see it.

So the only thing left is my cable modem and I can't see going through all this just for a little glitch that has to be barried somewhere on the Shatters.net server. So if anyone else has trouble seeing pictures in the gallery and in the furom it time to let Chris know that there is a glitch somewhere, or the P2P software on the server he shares is causing this problem even when its not running!

P2P software can a be a real nightmare, they can bring down any low-mid speed link. , i don't know the real topology of the network where this server is located but i assume this server is behind a *DSL router. I'd suggest they would use the Linux box as a router for the whole network and turn on some sort of bandwidth management policy on the Linux box. I've already done this to prevent P2P traffic from slowing my (shared) home link to a crawl and it works perfectly.
*DSL links are usually asymmetric so upload speed is much lower than download speed. P2P software tends to generate a lot of "outbounds" (upload) traffic so it's very likely the upload channel will reach saturation. We try to access the web server using an already overloaded upload channel so it's no surprise the pages take ages to load.
The solution is a combination of:
-Make always certain amount of upload bandwidth available to the webserver.
-Prevent the P2P traffic from taking over the upload channel.
I'd use the superb HTB packet scheduler ( http://luxik.cdi.cz/~devik/qos/htb/ ) and borrow some ideas from the wondershaper ( http://lartc.org/wondershaper/ ). The htb.init script will save a lot of headaches, believe me ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/htbinit ). You'll need a 2.4.20 kernel and you're almost in bussiness.
If you need some help (sample config files or whatever) just drop me a line.
