help with models...

Hi all,
First, a quick hello as I am new to this group and to Celestia. Wonderful piece of work...

I've had Celestia for about a week and have done a good amount of reading on this forum as to the how to's of add-ons. I've created a few textures, added some star wars planets(including Hoth with a really cool texture I made), and have had pretty good success(well, with some minor glitches). The problem I'm having however is with modelling. Since I've never done this before I downloaded a basic "freeware" modeller and made a couple of interesting things. I exported to them to 3ds, modified my ssc files where they needed and got the models to appear in Celestia. So far so good. However, the textures I create for them are NOT appearing in the program. I've tried putting them into each and every one of the textures folders.

I've noticed that some of the models already loaded with the program give the command "mesh" with the models while others say "texture" and some have both.

It may be that I'm missing the most elementary question...
Do the models have to be pre-rendered with their textures before being exported to 3ds?

If so, I'll need a better modelling program.

Thanx to anyone listening. And keep up the good work. This is an amazing program.

Have a look at Deep exploration - there's a link to it on the 'Space shuttle model' thread. While I can't get it to load textures directly onto the model (I think it can do that), it can colour the mesh for you. It's so coool.

We are curious - Which 3D Modeling Tool are you using?

I have two small(and rather cheesy)freeware programs. One is Draw3d and the other is photomodeller lite. Draw 3d allows you to model but doesn't really allow you to paint. It offers color variations but nothing in-depth. Photo modeller lets you import scanned photos(ie. a picture of your car from 3 different angles or maybe sketches, etc.)and generates 3d models based on the input.

Neither of these is a bad program but certainly not top of the line. Having said that I'll say that until I got Celestia a week ago I never tried to model ANYTHING. These progs may be better than I know given that I'm an amateur in every sense.

I found Draw3D here:

But i use an other nice modeling freeware Anim8or which can also handle 3ds files and have a simple texture support look here:

Bye Jens
