Putting Celestia in planetarium mode (CTRL+G while in Sync Orbit), I wonder where I actually land on The Earth. I can tell by the look of the sky that I am looking north. So to see the southern sky I need to turn the earth upside down. I would be grateful if somebody could confirm this. does anyone know how I can land at a particular geographical coordinates?

Also I was puzzled to see (on the ecliptic line), the word EARTH appearing against the star background. For example see the following:

Ben,

To land at a specific position on a planet's surface, first use the menu Navigation --> GoTo Object. Provide the desired longitude and latitude in the appropriate fields and click on GoTo. Then use the "GoTo surface" command.

Yes, seeing the Earth's name in the atmosphere after landing is a bug. It is fixed in v1.6.1, which will be available for public testing RealSoonNow.

One additional help to the instructions already given by Selden...

Before you goto the surface, you can influence the direction you will be looking at when landed...

Do this by rotating your screen (i.e. using the arrow keys).
The part of the screen that is facing up (at the top of your screen), will be the direction you are looking at after landing on the surface.
