I agree, I have been putting all texture credits in my readme files for some time now. I do however, for the base textures that come with Celestia and have been "retasked", I credit "Celestia" and not an individual.
If it is prefered the other way I would comply without hesitation.
The same should be done with models ie. the original author and the author of any modifications.
I too have noticed addons with no credits to anything or anyone at all.

I am happy to see this issue mentioned from time to time. I am sure that in most cases the lacking quotations are merely due to some lack of considerateness or lack of experience with giving credits.
Yet there is little doubt that giving credits for other peoples' work goes without saying and demonstrates peoples' sense of fairness and good style.

In professional science crediting incompletely is considered a 'dead sin' and usually creates nasty protest mails in the community.

Just FYI here...

As I test each add-on, I do try to look for credits (when I am aware of the sources.)
The problem is, however, that I do not always KNOW the sources of textures and/or models used
in an add-on. John is now helping with this, so we will hopefully address this issue in
a more stringent manner.

We DO encourage authors to cite all of their credits, but - again - this is hard to do
without being immersed in every add-on and texture ever created. If you see that
someone is blatantly using someone else's work WITHOUT citing credits. Please
just let us know via PM or e-mail.

There is another issue. Several maps - mostly Earth - and other stuffs, have been removed from ML. In this case, as for my concernings, I do not recall who made such maps; and in sametime I cannot check their provenience.
Never at rest.

Well, if you ask my opinion, a credit reference in the README (and any associated localized versions of that) of ANY type of add-on is a MUST, and a matter of discipline, just to respect the (previous) author(s).

If possible, the credit section should also be reproduced in the headers of available and associated (main)source files (e.g. word/pdf documentation, scripts, etc.). If it's hard to find out or even unknown who's the original author, I prefer to add a line containing the name of the add-on part with author "unknown", just to show the initial respect and credits (and possibly triggering someone, so it can be fixed later).

Furtheron, I can imagine it's a hard job to check all add-ons (and not only on the ML).
So it's good to not only have dead brains doing this job, but also long term brains

Bob, John, Ulrich I appreciate your work here very much :!:
