Yes, I've already done
that search myself... without much success (which is why I was hoping someone here might know something about it).
You may be right, however, I'm not quite as easily convinced as you that it's not possible.
There is a hint (in the second result of that search) that at least one person has been successful on a UNIX or LINUX platform using a FlightGear program called threedconvert.exe:

Unfortunately, I don't currently have a Linux or UNIX install, so I won't be able to try that program.

I happened to find a terrain model in *.bgl format which I was hoping to get into celestia, but it's not really a big deal.
