Celestia 1.6.0 RC2 for Windows

The Celestia 1.6.0 RC2 package for Windows is ready for testing. There are just a few differences from 1.6.0 RC1:

- numberedmoons.ssc now included in package
- Hale-Bopp moved to data/comets.ssc (and extras/comets.ssc removed--it had never been included in the Windows package)
- Fixed keyboard shortcuts on Win98/ME (this was a change for 1.5.1 by Christophe T. that was never integrated into the trunk)
- new Greek translation
- updated Korean translation

If you tried installing RC1 and had problems, we need your help! RC2 should fix the problems reported in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13748
However, we're unable verify that it does because none of the Celestia developers has a system without the missing libraries already installed.

For the moment, you can download the package from shatters.net. I will be uploading it to a faster server:

RC2 is now availble on the MotherLode as
http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/creat ... 160RC2.ZIP
(34MB, expands to 64MB)

You'll have to extract the installer from the Zip file before running it.
Sorry for the inconvenience. It's an ibiblio policy not to provide executable programs for direct download.

Perhaps Selden could replace the RC1 package currently on the ML?
Just a thought. I'm sure that Ulrich wouldn't mind.

Yep, I did move it to our RC directory:

Sorry for the delay.

Just a brief question, and hopefully it hasn't already been discussed (I've been out of the Celestia-loop for some time now).

When I attempt to edit the solarsys.ssc file, even for simple items such as removing or adding nighttextures, disablingother textures, the entire file will not be read by Celestia, even if I undo those changes. Now, I used to extensively modify this file "back in the day" (versions 1.5 and before), so has something changed?

And yes, I know there are other ways to mae changes in the Solar System, asid from editing that file, but I actually find it easierto modify the source, especially when I have several different installations of Celestia on the computer, each for a different purpose (one fo scientific addons, one for Star Trek, one for my own ArcBuilder stuff, etc.).

John,

I don't think that anything has been done intentionally to prevent editing of solarsys.ssc. The symptom you describe usually is caused by invalid coding in the file. Have you tried doing a comparison between the original file and your modified version? (fc under windows, diff under Linux and [presumably] MacOS; I used diff under Windows with Cygwin.)

However, when I just now edited solarsys.ssc using Emacs, it complained that it didn't know what encoding to use when writing the edited file. I selected UTF-8. diff between the new and old versions revealed that there is an encoded hyphen between two of the numbers in the comments, in the line which looks like

Code: Select all

(1988) 309-315.

Maybe that is causing the problem you see.

Anyhow, I'll report the encoded hyphen as a bug. There's no need for non-ASCII encoding in solarsys.ssc.

Thanks, Selden!

I'm not savvy to the degree of really understanding what you were describing **chuckles**. I have always used Notepad to edit the files, although admittedly I've not really had the time to play with Celestia for the past year, which is also when I first bought a computer that runs Windows Vista. So perhaps there is a problem there, as well.

But at any rate, thank you very muh for your help!

Well, you can use "file compare" (fc) to look for changes you don't expect. That might help.

I find that WinMerge is quite good also for comparing files or even whole folder structures for differences.

The line Selden is referring to is in the comments at the top of the file. I see 3 characters too when I use ghex. I also see a "longer" hyphen when I use kwrite.
A simple fix is to backspace or delete the hyphen and replace it with your keyboards minus sign and save the file. If it still doesn't work, then something else must be wrong too.

Strange,

editing with Editplus2 on WinXP works without any problems. But I also see a some strange characters at this point.

Code: Select all

309?€“315

But it seems the editor I use is able to just convert the stuff to the right code, so that everything works fine.

Anyways it is better if this is changed, so that all editors on all systems work again.

Guckytos

I've committed a new version of solarsys.ssc that uses a standard ASCII hyphen in the comment.
