A bit of fun ... Wormhole Travel in Celestia

Post #1by Chuft-Captain » 10.04.2009, 22:03

Instantaneous Wormhole travel in Celestia...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kri3qJifihc

The starship Enterprise enters a wormhole near the orbit of Mars and exits at Castor. NOTE the distance from Sol (top left corner) before and after the starship enters the wormhole.
The Black Hole is adapted from Cham's CygnusX1 black hole.

Also featuring the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701 (posted by Cham) from: http://www.foundation3d.com/index.php?c ... tionid=204

Sorry about the poor quality, it's much better in Celestia itself.

Yep...and comes out the other side 51 light years away at Castor. :)

That is cool!!
Would you share how you did this?
I always thought it would be cool to make the Bajoran wormhole in my Bajor addon transversible.
Start at DS-9 and end up in the Gamma Quadrant.
That would open a whole new bunch of system addons.

Thanks,
Tim

Not bad!

Looks like some scripting work? Two different models, and a script set to follow the Castor Enterprise right when the Sol Enterprise reaches the "wormhole"?
Current Setup:
Windows 7 64 bit. Celestia 1.6.0.
AMD Athlon Processor, 1.6 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics

Nice effect!

FYI, I use another of Cham's add-ons (flying down the long axis of the jets in one of his pulsar add-ons), to simulate a wormhole. Here is a short youtube video of it, to music. I have not incorporated the Enterprise or used a script ... its just a short segment to show what the wormhole effect looks like.

Here's the SSC's and script required for the wormhole simulation:
ccWormhole.zip
NOTE: THIS HAS BEEN UPDATED TO USE AS YET UNRELEASED 1.6.1 FUNCTIONALITY SO IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN EXECUTABLE BUILT FROM THE LATEST SVN CODE, DON'T BOTHER DOWNLOADING -- WAIT FOR 1.6.1 TO BE RELEASED.

I haven't uploaded any of the models and textures as these are based on other's work and are already available for download elsewhere. So you'll need to get your hands on those and place them in the usual sub-ordinate folders.

Notably, it uses the models and textures from: Cham's Black Abyss/Cygnus X1
EDIT: Copy the models, and textures folders from this addon into the cc_Wormhole folder.

...and I adapted the meshes from the Enterprise model featured in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=13639&p=113922&hilit=enterprise#p113922
EDIT: Copy the models, and textures folders from this addon into the cc_Wormhole\Enterprise folder.
(although any spacecraft model could be substituted for the Enterprise with appropriate adjustments to the SSC)

Finally, Chris' animationlib.lua function is required. -- Get it from here: http://shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=13428&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=animationlib.lua

Enjoy for personal non-commercial use.

Thanks Cham for the wonderful Black Hole model and for sourcing the Enterprise model.

For the wormhole enthusiasts out there... :)

I was never satisfied with the very poor quality of my original video capture (due to practical limitations of my machine it was small and poor quality).

So, I've recently created an improved video (similar to the original but now in 720p, and with the addition of some rather *appropriate* music.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccCZZ40iJuM
(Make sure to select quality = 720p when viewing in Youtube)

Enjoy
