Virus Alert!

I'm not sure where else to put this.

I just received a KLEZ infected e'mail from somewhere in Italy.

The PC belongs to someone in Italy who reads this forum: I'm sure of this because it had a bogus return address of shatters.net. The IP address of the PC was 62.11.4.183. That address is registered as a dialup number for the ISP tiscali.it.

If I got a copy, I suspect others will be getting copies, too. If you don't already have one, everyone running Windows should get a copy of a modern anti-virus package, update it so that it knows about current viruses, do a full scan of all of your disks, and also enable "realtime virus protection".

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings.

This is why I use a web based mail client...yahoo or hotmail...and open nothing I cannot recognize in 5 seconds or less ;)

Any message that had KLEZ in it is completely bogus. It was not intentionally sent to you by any person. The virus picks a random file from the infected machine to accompany the virus binary. It's to keep you distracted while it trashes your system.

Also, if you haven't already enabled it. Have Outlook Express only download the Hotmail messages Headers. That way you have to manually tell Outlook to open the message, rather than relying on the Hotmail virus scanner.
