Newbie. Adding on add-ons?

Just read an article in Sky and Telescope on the program, so I had to give it a try. I love it!

How do I install the different types of add-ons I'm finding? There's no documentation, that I can find, on this.

Thanx

If your using mine I would unzip to your desktop or somewhere other than the Celestia directory then it will give you a general idea of where the files belong...Otherwise extract to the Celestia root directory...When it prompts you to overwrite a folder...do so...this will not overwrite any current files save for starnames.dat which will be overwritten with each addon that uses it...in which case it is better to extract to the desktop...

Celestia is generally located on c:\program files\celestia for windows users...others Im unsure of..

Okay. After I unzip, in which folder do I put what file? For example, where do I put ssc files, PNG images, Jpeg images, etc.?

For addons exclusively...
c:\program files\celestia\textures\medres < all textures (.jpg .png .dds)
c:\program files\celestia\extras < all .ssc files
c:\program files\celestia\models < all .cms and .3ds files
c:\program files\celestia\data < all .dat files and .xyz files

I just followed the link at the bottom of your reply, clicked on Galaxies Database by Paul, and it comes up as a txt document. It says to copy this file to Celestia/Data/, then to rename the file to 'galaxies.dat'. When I do this it still remains a text doc. What am I doing wrong?

BTW. Thanks for taking the time to help.

you will have to save as in notepad choose all files and save as galaxies.dat...otherwise move to c:\ then open the start menu > run > type: command then enter and type at the prompt c:\>

ren galaxies.txt galaxies.dat
or
ren galaxy~1.txt galaxy~1.dat

There are lots of ways to find objects.

For solar system objects, you can start up Celestia, use the Render/View Options menu to turn on all possible presentation modes, Goto the Sun,
and then backoff a long way to see what's visible. Play with the View options to see which things you want to watch.

Also, you can look in the various SSC files to find the object names and use the Navigation/Goto Object menu to go visit them.

If you're using Windows, a "wheel mouse" is one of the easier methods of navigating. Read the Help/Controls menu for other navigation commands.
