Binaries database?

Post #1by Slartibartfast » 15.01.2008, 17:07

Is there a database that has data that could be used to construct binaries, ternaries, etc within Celestia? If SIMBAD has the info, it is in a context/format that I don't recognize. (Which wouldn't be surprising given my lack of expertise in the field.)

I just finished putting together the ternary systems of Regulus and Hadar (with much help from the incredible Hungry4info) and I had to comb the internet with a fine toothed comb to find the data. Life would be a lot easier if it were all in one place and I could read Greek.

Two fairly decent starting points, though it is a good idea to do some sanity checking on some of the entries...
Sixth Catalog of Orbits of Visual Binary Stars
Spectroscopic Binary Orbits Ninth Catalog

Also there are the papers linked in the visualbins.stc and spectbins.stc files provided with Celestia (though obviously these have already been implemented, so if you're trying to do a system that ISN'T in Celestia they probably won't help too much).
