Make sure that you have activated the Automag feature [CTRL+y] and THEN set the sensitivity with [ and ] keys. Their function is DIFFERENT from the case with Automag=OFF!

Neither of these suggestions helped make the Galaxies more visible, i still cannot see even the milkyway!

its cool to zoom out with auto mag off stars set a points and have the camera set to follow sol, you can turn the stars around sol to any angle and view the shape of all the know stars in The Galaxy!

i would like to do this with the known Galxies.

Then you monitor is not properly adjusted or you did NOT enable galaxy display in the menu!!!

The latter is MUCH more probable

Here's a stupid question for you from the Brain-Dead...

Do you have galaxy-rendering enabled? Just a thought.

Under the "Render" tab, "View Options" "Galaxies." Is it enabled?

If so, do you have any galaxies installed? If not, you should still be
able to see the Milky Way as you look around the Earth.

now that its turned on i can only see a few galaxies that are close to The Milky way m31 and others but as i travel away many galaxies become visible briefly and disapear again.

i get the feeling this is something ill just have to live with, they appear to be brightest when auto magnitude is off and the stars are are set at 12 magnitude

You GOT to activate Automag and set ']' high enough. Also you should activate the galaxy labels!

Yes, of course, the Universe is pretty big and the intensity falls like 1/distance^2 ... You should select particular galaxies and then zoom in with SHIFT+mouse_left movements!

It seems you are doing it all WRONG.

If you want to see a galaxy cluster from Earth, do this:
( you should of course use a reasonably recent pre1.5.0
version!!)

Activate automag (CTRL+y)
Set the Automagnitude limit at 45 degs to 8.5 with the ] key
Activate the galaxy labels by hitting 'E'.
Enter in the command line : m 91
Hit 'c' to center m 91 in the field.

Then use SHIFT+mouse_L movements to zoom in.
You will see LOTS of galaxies.

Thats pretty rad but it seems to work better by turning automagnitude OFF, and turning up the magnitude to 15, though the galaxies them selves are not visible when Galaxy labels are turned on you see thousands of galaxies!
