Is this possible? I want to be able to see only certain classes of stars in the night sky. For example if I wanted to see an M3 I-II star I want to be able to filter out the night sky to only show stars in that category.

Celestia does not include that type of filter.

However, one could write a Celx script that would mark those stars with a circular mark that would look somewhat like a "star".

Two examples of similar scripts, marking stars within a specific distance, were recently posted to the Forum.

Is there a data base online somewhere that would allow me to brows the HIP and HD cataloges?

I want to be able to be centered around say any given star...and from that star filter out specifc star types.

hmmm...i tried to use those scripts but both of them caused Celestia to not load properly.

At first I thought it was because I used a simple math conversion for the ly to km on the second one. But i got the same results for both scripts unedited.

Most professional astronomical catalogs can be downloaded from
http://vizier.u-strasbg.fr/viz-bin/VizieR

Information about individual astronomical objects can be obtained from
http://simbad.u-strasbg.fr/sim-fid.pll

The scripts will crash if your browser window is too narrow when you copy them: that will break the lines in random places and cause a fatal error.
