Will the discoveries never cease? Appearantly not! Scientists found yet another planet orbiting a nearby star. Read the MSNBC article here:

Looks like making that system will be a challenge...Look for a rather large ssc file for all the asteroid particles

Dang, I already have a system around Fomalhaut. Oh well, should be exciting if I managed to "discover" a planet before anyone else... :D

Anyway, how did they get that pretty artist's depiction so fast? Is it just a generic extrasolar planet painting, or did the artist know about it in advance and they only just got about reporting it?

Unfortunately, it's a little hard to contact the artist and find out, since they didn't give any credit. That suggests the picture was created by a staff member. There isn't a lot of detail in what can be seen, so it might not have taken very long to make. A couple of hours, maybe? Some artists cn do things like that really quickly.

But then, panets forming out of dust clouds is, of course, a very old theory. It's just that actually being able to detect the clouds is a relatively recent accomplishment. They could have had the picture on file for a long time.

Or someone could actually try contacting them and ask...
