Quaoar, anyone?

so they finally discover transpluto, and then they go on and name it
...Quaoar?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/2306945.stm

Quaoar gives only one google hit just now (but I figure this will change quickly):
http://www.angelfire.com/journal/cathbo ... Qgods.html

this seems to be some database of gods:

Quaoar: Their only god who "came down from heaven; and, after reducing chaos to order, out the world on the back of seven giants. He then created the lower animals," and then mankind. Los Angeles County Indians, California

( Greek gods not good enough anymore, eh? :) )

anyway, I think it will be some time before we get a texture for celestia...

I created a .ssc file for Quaoar . . .

http://www.celestiaproject.net/celestia/files/kuiperbelt.ssc

As usual, copy it to your extras directory . . . I just borrowed Pluto's texture (which is fictional except for the large scale albedo variations), but it's likely that these bodies look quite different. Pluto's thaws enough to develop a thin atmosphere, which eventually refreezes when it's elliptical orbit takes it further from the Sun. Quaoar is in a less eccentric orbit further from the Sun, so it probably doesn't experience these thaw/freeze cycles.

Very nice. =)

Nothing like discovering (or, to be more precise, reporting the existence of) a sizable object on the fringe of our solar system and then, only a few hours later, already having a custom texture for it. Amazing!

Unfortunatley, not everyone has an Nvidia card, so I'm sure there are lots of people who'd enjoy either a jpeg or png version.

excepting Uranus, well, yes.

although they are all pretty much ripped off copies of their greek counterparts.

Of course, in greek, MVTMJSUNP will become HAGAZKUPH.
But with the Los Angeles County Indians, I don't know,
maybe XQQZQYZYQQ?

as one slashdot poster put it: THE SCRABBLE PLANET! :D
