I??m in a dilemma.I don??t have money to buy a motherboard,CPU and memory, but I do have money to buy another 1 GB of RAM.But I can??t find the identical 2X512 MB paired memory so I would lost the dual channel. Is it worth it?
In a few months,I will have much more money, but then the DDR400 memories will be very hard to find.So what to do?

My system would be:
Athlon 64 3000
2 GB RAM Kingston(not in dual channel)
7600 GT 256 MB PCI-E

What do you need more than 2 GB of RAM for???

I "only" have 1 GB (on an Athlon 64 X2), and I've never felt the need to upgrade.

In Celestia,I don??t know. But I tried to load a 7.7 MB .kmz model in Google Earth and there isn??t enough memory to do it.The same happened to Berlim 3D.I suppose that extremely detailed 3D meshes or very high resolution of planets or moons will need more than 1 GB to load, since I think 256 MB for a video card is a lot of memory...
And remember that I don??t have money to buy a complete AM2 system,so dual core is beyond my hands!I can??t afford it!

I can only speak for myself, being a Mac user, but if you plan to keep on using this system for the forseable future, I would certainly buy as much RAM as it takes as long as your type is available and reasonably priced.

In this fashion I've kept my (now retired) PowerMac G4-400 alive and kicking as my primary desktop for about five years. I got it containing 128 MB and retired it about two years ago with elevenfold that amount (2 * 512 MB + 1 * 256 MB + 1 * 128 MB)

For thoughs of us that work heavily in Photoshop 2GB is a great help. I have seen load times haved since I added another gig of RAM.

As for the Dual chanel issue, you will loose about 5-10% in memory speed access, but of course you will be able to load more into it. So its a hand off.

Hope this helps and ggod luck.
