But these music files you want to put in Celestia are in mp3 or midi format?

You are a bad, bad, bad boy!!!

I don't play music in my computer while running Celestia, not only because I have a very decent multi-cd player+dvd player, but also because all these CPU cycles (supposedly) stolen from Celestia!! If I focus enough in my screen, I forget at all about music (and sometimes, people, food... ).

Well, yes, but ...
One had been heard this a bit too often I presume - same with Carmina Burana.
I personally prefer the floating patterns and the layers that goa or trans gives you.

Why not Garbage punk or trash metal, then ?

Well, give me a script with a wild ride through an asteriod field, then I'd like some fast music with hard beats. But when I'm on my own I'm just floating in space.

LOL, I was joking, of course !

Personally, I listen to ambiance music while in Celestia. Slow mood only, and only electronics or synthetiser music. I prefer out of this world music for a cosmic ride. My prefered music is Classical (J.S. Bach), but NOT in Celestia.

I think that any "normal" music (classical, for example) doesn't fit in space, when you feel very far away from home. I have a constraint for Celestia music : I must not recognise any normal life, civilised occidental world references in the music. All musical instruments must be computerised or electronics.

As I said, it is all a matter of personal opinion what music is good, and I think Techno and computerized music is probably the way to go in a space program.

Adagio for Strings, Samual Barber

It was used as the theme in the first version of Homeworld.

Any way of accompanying the Tours etc. with speech, ie. text to speech conversion, or even just initiating a sound file?

Regards

Andy

Interestingly almost every style has some music that fits with celestia, a great amount that doesn't fit. Vocals are almost certain a reason for exclusion. There are some really nice ambient tracks of course. Some of the work of Brian Eno also fits well. Classic music often has a too dramatic appearance for space cruising IMHO. I think it would fit well if carefully choosen for certain script journeys - think of the Zarathustra theme at the beginning of '2001 Space Odysee'.

I couldn't agree more, vocals just don't go with these kind of programs.

Maxim, I absolutely agree on the need to change music themes with the various Celestia scripts. :D
And for this reason I'm coming again on a previous post (Borg Collective, where are you? 8O ) regarding the possibility, once chosen a particular music for a script, to start "together" both the Celestia script and its relevant music, using the same desktop icon.
In this way we can have (as I'm doing actually) one desktop icon for every chosen script, but (and I'm still missing it) with its music starting at the same time. :D
By the way, in our Museum we are using themes taken from the seven GEODESIUM ALBUMS
http://www.lochness.com/geo/geo.html
produced with emulator and synthesizer by Mark C. Petersen, and visitors are very pleased of this. :D
If you click on the albums icons:

you can listen many clips.

But that should be possible by now.
Harry has added the 'ScriptSystemAccessPolicy' switch do Celestias configuration file. That implies to me that the usage of the io- and os-libraries in celx-scripts is possible now. 'os.execute(command)' for example should pass 'command' to a system shell.

So 'os.execute(winamp mymusic.mp3)' should play the track 'mymusic' on a windows system using winamp. Or - more general if your mimetypes are properly set - 'os.execute(mymusic.mp3)' should play the track on your favourite player. You may be aware that it's best to have the player running already, otherwise there may be a delay while it's loading and it may pop up in front of the celestia window.

I haven't tested that yet, but I don't see any argument against.

Yes Maxim, but only in .celx files, not in .cel files, if I remember well.
Someone told me that it could be possible to make a script that launches two different files, i.e. Celestia and WinAmp, e.g.. :P
But I'm unaware of this, so I cannot do myself, sorry.

I listen to a 5 hour playlist of classical, new age instrumental and contemporary native american music.

I also find that working on items for celestia, and just cruising the galaxy, time kinda gets lost.

In general I have to agree, I tend to go for music by Jean Michel Jarre, but I've recently found that there's some good tracks on Daft Punks Discovery album - the aptly named 'Voyager' being one!

But I still think there's room for;

Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft by the Carpenters,
David Bowie's Space Oddity
and
The Eve of the War by Jeff Wayne.

Couldn't one start a .cel script from inside .celx? Or was it the other way round? Anyway, if you PM me, we could try to assemble a working example.

I think that some music at http://geocities.yahoo.com.br/ielcinis/ would serve. All musics are in MIDI format. Visit this site, and you'll see that at least some musics are nice. 8)
This site is dedicated exclusively to our solar system. But the site is in Portuguese language. I also put a post in Purgatory that is saying about this site. I think that the best type of music is in MIDI format. This type of file format tend to be smaller than in MP3. I'm thinking of implementing some of these musics in my next addon.

Based on Pulsar Sounds addon, I think that it might be a good idea to Chris put an option in Celestia that accepts to have a new folder called "Musics", and then put an option that allows to play music. This option would have a Play,Stop and Change track buttons. And an extra option for music can repeat infinite times. All these options would be "switching on/off". :)

music suitable for Celestia

I HIGHLY recommend this:

Jean Michel Jarre - Waiting for Cousteau
Vangelis - Albedo 0.39

Warning: they are very 'calm' tracks

You have to try them

..also other stuff from Mike Oldfield, Jarre, Vangelis, etc
