You can get these textures here: http://www.celestialvisions.net/addons
I would like to point out that the mstar texture looks perfect with M stars but not R C N and S classes...I think maybe these should be assigned a seperate texture...
You could overlay an ssc planet as a fix to this as I have done in my rndssc project...

Mr. Rassilon?
Sorry to complain, but the site appears to be down? Can't view the pages or
get to the "addons" directory. (Monday Night July 5, 10:40pm EST)
Thanks, Bob

I apologize for that...I was doing some domain changes to the site as I am preparing for a switchover...and I didnt think this would affect the site...For now you will have to access everything via the url below

Alternate textures are all well and good, but I'd still much rather prefer having stars looking more brilliant than they currently do in Celestia
Having played EVE (from which the picture in my initial post was taken), I must admit that my expectations have been raised somewhat. I accept that one is a high-budget computer game and the other is an open source project (and a very good one at that), but still - EVE shows me that it IS potentially possible to make more realistic looking stars.

Thank you sir... No inconvenience whatsoever. Thanks VERY much for the
textures.
Take care, Bob

I've been meaning to reply to this for a while. The size of the sunspots in Celestia is a pretty good match for the most active part of the solar cycle, (though I think they're spread implausibly far in latitude). A couple of years ago, at the last maximum, it was easy enough to see sunspots with the naked eye at sunrise and sunset, and there are many photos of large spots available from that time, like the one here:

Thanks Grant. I realized that large spots were occasionally present, but apparently, they are common enough to be included in all stars that Celestia displays (since all the default star textures have them). It is just unusual that I have seen so many photos of the sun with primarily small spots. Oh well!

I've no idea what the distribution of star-spots is across spectral classes, but we do know that some stars require much bigger spots - covering a significant part of a hemisphere!fsgregs wrote:I realized that large spots were occasionally present, but apparently, they are common enough to be included in all stars that Celestia displays (since all the default star textures have them).

Back to an old topic here on what stars should look like in Celestia...Ive been playing around alot with OpenGL and have come up with a pretty decent software rendered star...I think this is what stars should look like in Celestia:
http://celestialvisions.net/pics/star.jpg
http://celestialvisions.net/pics/star2.jpg
http://celestialvisions.net/pics/star3.jpg
http://celestialvisions.net/pics/star4.jpg
So far these use textures so thier not 100% software rendered. I plan on implementing perlin noise textures in buffers that will work far better and take up far less space! Not to mention using procedural textures will also allow me to use animation on the textures. Right now I have two textures rotating in opposite directions giving it that boiling effect...Its pretty neat seeing it up close. Also there a tad transparent so you can see through them with the nebula showing through from the background...but other than that there almost perfect. some more minor adjustments in the future will make them even better...
Anyways I would like to see something like this in Celestia!

Like Evil Dr Ganymede I too believe its possible to fool the eyes that something is bright on the monitor. Here is an example.
Sorry for the large size but I kept it this big to keep the effect. Doesnt it seem bright? Does it feel like you have the "sun spots" in you're eyes when you look away like when you stare at something to bright for to long. It works for me .

Nice screenshots - except i cannot see any of them...
Alway a red x in the spot the image should be which indicates it is not there or not available.
Ok, i understand that - could be not enough room on the forum server or they were actually links to someone's site...
So, since i would love to see them, is there another place i could find them - say on the poster's sites?
Thanks,
smbika

The only show that could beat Stargate<whatever> in a fair fight is Firefly...
