Fridger,

I'll speak up and say that I always check the updates to this Spitzbergen thread. As you know, I'm a big fan of snow and ice. It's sad to see it disappearing for the summer at Ny-Alesund. Fortunately, I can still feed my snow addiction here in Seattle--we have a 4390m volcano two hours away from the city that's covered by 90 square kilometers of glaciers. Here are photos from hiking/snowboarding last week:

http://www.celestiaproject.net/photos/view_alb ... er-19jun04

Unfortunately, there's no live webcam on Mt. Rainier with views of the glaciers . . .

Well, it's not in Washington, but there are Webcams at Glacier National Park.

Chris,

I am glad you like these ever changing Spitsbergen
views, too. I am really hooked. Well, I do have a
"personal relation" to that gorgeous place (as has
Grant  ).

Thanks for the links to your great photos from Mt.
Rainier. I regularly watch your documented excursions
to the Whistler area, since I did some hiking there, too
some time ago, as I told you.

There are also WEB cams in the region of very high
glacier peaks (<=4400 m) in the Engadin/Switzerland,
where we will be hiking for the 11th year during this
summer season...Due to these cams that I click almost
daily, I meanwhile have a fair idea how spring, fall and
winter looks like there...

Incredible, it's winter again!! Midnight sun is gone and darkness will soon prevail.

Have a look above at the WEB cam from Ny Alesund and Longyearbyen...

Just have another look at the WEBcams close to the top of my thread!

I now have watched the WEBcams almost on a daily basis for 3/4 of a year! This really provided a lasting impression of what the climate is like up there...

The people in Spitsbergen have a pretty short time without snow coverage. Also it's already getting quite dark...

It's well worth to look at the WEBcams above typically around noon (11:00 UTC) to appreciate how dark it is now, already. Total darkness ahead for quite a few months to come ...

Solid snow cover....

Here are the cam images once more for your convenience

Maybe the lightshow was not quite as spectacular as can be seen in Spitsbergen, but none the less, a very rare event happened near my home last weekend.

Here's an article from our local Newspaper;

http://ichuddersfield.icnetwork.co.uk/0 ... _page.html

Unfortunately I missed it. Bah !
I never dreamed the Aurora Borealis could be witnessed so near to home.

Hey TERRIER,

Wow...this was really spectacular for the UK latitude. But like me you apparently also noticed the amazing recordings of the Aurora Borealis from Ny Alesund via the above WEBcam.

It's really worthwhile to keep checking from time to time...

Have a look at the young 2005 daylight around 13:30 UTC!

It looks NOT of this world...

The temperature is still pretty low, varying between -25 deg C (night) and -17 deg C ("day")

So if we visit here regularly we will see an ever changing picture, and a chance to see some spectacular 'almost live' views of Aurora-Borealis?

Yes it would be lovely to see similar views from Spitzbergen in Celestia

Could it be done as an alternate texture like the 'cloud shadows' that are currently available?

regards
TERRIER

You mean like placing the Aurora on a cloudmap? I've done that one one of my planets:

Nice one P.E. !

Just out of interest, what does your aurora look like from the planet's surface ?

P.E.

how about /animating/ your Aurora along the lines Runar made his animated sun flares!!?

Would be real fun.
