Celestia 1.5.0pre3
Wierd Pre3 Bug
I'm getting a few odd text bugs in Pre3.
If I start Celestia using the icon the setup added to my desktop or from the it's icon in the start menu all the on screen displays and script text (but not menus, or labels) shows up as question marks. If I start Celestia by clicking it's executable in Windows Explorer text shows up normally.
In either case the lower portion of the text is slightly cut off.

I noticed that happening as well, although I can't describe the exact situation that it was occurring.

The question marks mean that Celestia cannot find the characters in the fonts that it has loaded. This suggests to me that Celestia cannot find the font files. This suggests to me that the desktop shortcut is damaged.
Open the Shortcut's Properties menu and inspect the field "Start in:" (right click on Celestia's desktop shortcut icon, select Properties in the popup menu).
It should contain the path to the directory where you installed Celestia. On my system, that's "C:\Program Files\Celestia"
What does it say on your system?
[edit]
p.s.
Fonts sometimes look damaged when certain levels of Antialiasing are enabled manually in ForceWare's popup control menu. I don't know why. They look OK on my system if 4x antialiasing is enabled, either manually or in celestia.cfg.
p.p.s.
If the shortcut is damaged, you can create a good one by opening an Explorer window to Celestia's directory and right-dragging the executable's icon to the desktop. Select "create shortcut here" in the popup menu.

This conversation should probably move to the bugs forum, but here are a few more details...
Re Question Marks:
-Shortcuts are not "damaged", newly created shortcuts have same issue
-Starting from any shortcut outside of the "Celestia" folder, results in question marks for some text
-Some fonts are being found, as some text shows up just fine. Fonts that display correctly include: Object labels, Numbers no matter where they are displayed, Title
-This would seem to be related to not setting paths appropriately, but the issue seems to be within Celestia.
-I have Celestia installed to a non-standard location "C:\My Programs\Celestia", which might explain why this issue isn't seen generally.
Re Bottom of Font Cut-Off:
-Anti-aliasing was the cause of the lower portions of fonts being cut off.

Mine is also in a non-standard location. "E:\Program Files\Celestia 1.5.0pre3"
Celestia 1.5.0pre3 is the only Celestia I have that is doing this. Pre2 works just fine, located in "E:\Program Files\Celestia 1.5.0pre2". I also believe that this is a bug with-in Celestia... maybe... *shrug*

Differences between pre3 and CVS
Two questions about the differences between pre3 and CVS:
1. Eclipse Finder
Is there any reason why the eclipse finder differs from pre3 to CVS?
(pre3 contains the old (familiar) finder, CSV contains the new finder)
2. Size of the exe-file
Why does the size of the .exe differ (pre3: ~2500 KB / CVS: ~1700 KB)?
Did I miss something?

That might work, if the executable in Explorer was working right, but that .exe produces the same results:

Bruce,
Exactly what do you mean by "does not run"?
You do have to make sure your system has the most recent graphics drivers. Celestia has to depend on the graphics drivers being bug free, which too often is not the case. There is not the staff of hundreds available to implement workarounds for the bugs for all possible hardware and driver combinations.

Ras',
That's caused by Celestia being confused about which Locale to use. There are several workarounds.
1. Specify the Locale by running this two line celestia.bat instead of running Celestia directly
(thanks to Kolano for that suggestion)
2. Make Celestia's locale files unavailable. e.g. rename the folder Celestia\locale to be Celestia\nolocale
(thanks to piellepi for that one)
3. The "correct" fix is to set Windows' definition of Locale
1. Click Start > Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Regional and Language Options icon.
The Regional and Language Options dialog box appears.
3. Click the Advanced tab.
(If there is no Advanced tab, then you are not logged in with administrative privileges.)
4. Under the Language for non-Unicode programs section, select the desired language from the drop down menu. e.g.
English(United States)
(this is according to various Web pages)
Some people have reported that this last method doesn't actually work. It worked fine for me, though.

Thanks selden that helped alot...
But sadly my woes continue... And it might be due to my inability to update the drivers... Most textures appear dark in the Mythica addon I was looking at as if they were not present... The night side was lit up but the sunny side was dark... Also some did not have the haze as they were supposed to etc... To various to really put a finger on it but I think it has to do with my drivers...
