As the file's extension indicates, it was created in Zip format. If you're running Windows XP, you can just double-click on the icon and Windows will open it for you.

If you're using some other operating system, you may need to install a program that understands Zip format, although most already include a Zip program of some kind.

3DS format is supported by just about every 3D modelling program if you use their "import" and "export" commands. It's not a native format, so it's usually not available using the "save as..." command.

There also are many conversion utilities, free, shareware or commercial, which will convert 3DS into other formats.

Aww... you're teasing! I was hoping for a nice model of the lander. And yeah, for some reason, some of the 3ds models will open in Max and some won't. I guess it depends on how the author created them?

I would guess that 3DS Max is much more strict about adherence to the "standard" than other programs would be. After all, they're the ones who defined it ;) I know Celestia will display some 3DS model files that are unreadable by any 3D modelling programs. (e.g.. files that have been damaged by using a text editor to change the names of their surface texture images.)

I have no problems opening the .3ds model file using Anim8or.
