I think the dots models I'm able to do (without sprites) have LOTS of potential, but I currently don't want to invest much more time on them because of the luminosity problem. :-(

I wish sprites would work properly too, but the point sprite crashing bug on PPC Macs is an Apple driver bug, and since OS X graphic driver updates are almost always only included with new OS updates, I suspect the earliest it will be fixed is in Leopard (October 2007).

Apple is supposed to deliver another update to Tiger : 10.4.10. Is it possible that the bug could be corrected in that version ? (of course, my question is stupid !)

How can I download anything using STANDARD zip tools? Both under Linux and Windows I keep getting an error like so:

URL you want to be translated is:application/x-zip-compressed, it is not supported by WTS.

Go to the original (untranslated) URL (i.e. http://4d2u.nao.ac.jp/html/program/mitaka), locate the download link (search for "1.0.1") and click the link. I suppose the translator breaks the link.

I'm unable to go to both links.

What are the changes in version 1.0.1 ?

I don't see any references to version 1.0.1 there.

Their installation procedure sucks ! :x

Here's my translation of the 1.0.1 release notes:
(disclaimer: I have never used the program)
- You can double click to select a target
- Almost any object can now be a target
- Tooltips for objects
- The view changes smoothly if you select a different target or scale
- Added more satellites for Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto
- Updated list of stars with planets
- Satellites now displayed in planetarium mode
- 4-hour time increments added
- Fixed issue where program crashed on some Vista laptops
- Improved performance on laptops by changing the way points are drawn
- Removed Galaxy panoramic view and Galaxy cluster view commands (not sure if these are translated as in the actual program) from the Target menu. These commands can still be found in the Scale menu.

I'm a bit worried about Celestia... Have you seen the state of advancement of Mitaka?

Seems they are targeting pretty high...

Have a look at their interactive Flash presentation (formation of the moon, gas structure around black hole, formation of galaxies etc... 8O), pretty interesting:

The cosmological part of Mitaka IMHO is quite superior than Celestia. The Milky way rendering is really amazing. And what about globular clusters?

I like the HUD menu too.

Fading of orbits and scale meters are interesting features.

On the other hand several other aspects are better in Celestia.

The flash application is astonishing. How the hell they was able to manage that in Flash? Really incredible.

Well, it may not be dead to them, but for me it is since our latest features (especially layers at all scales).

Lets add a better planetographic grid and better uses of the four grids (especially coordinates of the selected object), and Celestia will crush completely and bury MitakaWatheverWannaBe !

I just test back the 1.0 version on the intel config and it run pretty well. One thing I like even if it's not accurate is the asteroids belts and the oort cloud. I wonder if some cmod models could not be done in the same way for Celestia but of course we need the fading of the points before reaching the problem we have actually...

Also one thing I find interesting is the way they wrote their specular light with an increment of the power depending the point of view:

If I'm not wrong some shots from ISS do show such "rendering"... :?

Mmhh... no comments... :?
Perhaps I'm saying a big stupidity because Celestia already have such rendering? (and it's just a problem with my config?)
Or perhaps the Mikata rendering is plain wrong?
