My joystick does not work with Celestia 1.4.1 and I don't understand why.
Computer:
WinXP-Pro sp2.
AMD Athlon XP, 1400MHz; 1.5GB DDR 266MHz.
NVIDIA GeForce 6800XT w/512MB.
Logitec Attack3 USB Joystick.
The joystick *is* plugged in. Windows recognizes it and its config tool hears all it's buttons/axes. Video games such as xwing alliance see it without problem... Including all 11 buttons. I've installed the newest driver from logitech. I can't find any conflicts. I've checked to be certain my F8 key works: it does.
I've looked through the Shatters forums, searching for the word "joystick". I have found nothing helpful. It seems no one has had the simple problem of not having the joystick work. I feel like an idiot! I'm obviously missing something simple but I can't for the life of me figuring out what.
I'm at my whits end. Celestia is among my favorite programs. I love zooming through the cosmos as if I'm in a spaceship. It's silly but it's so fun! And to find Sol and Earth with as few pointers as possible! Just the star names showing. From m31, if I can.... That joy... That feeling of accomplishment, silly as it is... I can't do it without a joystick. The mouse is horrid in this regard.
I hope I've posted in the right place.
I joined the forum specifically to ask for advise.
Please help.
Joystick troubles
Sorry: I just now plugged in my ancient Microsoft USB joystick; its buttons and axis motions both work fine, both with V1.4.1 and the current CVS build. Maybe someone else will have a suggestion.
It would be nice if there were a flash message when you type F8 saying whether or not the joystick was enabled. It's easy to loose track of which state it's in when things aren't working as expected.

I appear to have the same problem.
Celestia does not recognize the input on my 17-key three-axis Logitech "Extreme3d Pro" Flightstick, and this is highly irritating. I am at least comforted that my misery has company. I'm afraid the keyboard functions won't do, however. I have used them, but do not care for them. I am, after all, asking about the joystick because I want to use the joystick, not because I don't know how to use the keyboard.
...I apologize if I sound irate; I've simply been too jaded by forums full of trolls and sarcastic, smartaleck nitwits, with whom interaction requires stark specifics, as they have no capacity for abstraction and would rather state the most obvious side-track (or outright insult you) than give you an answer.
