A Quick(but probably repeated)Question...

Post #1by stenkhetment » 11.10.2005, 08:20

Hi all,
First off Major Kudos to the creaters and modders of this "outstanding" program. I'm also a orbiter user as well. Ok here's my question. I went ahead and downloaded the Celestia package. And I have downloaded some add-ons already. I have all the right files placed in the right directories. But when i go and start Celestia where do i go to in order to use them? Ex. I downloaded the Andromeda Galaxy, but how do i go to see it? I also downloaded the star wars package, and one of the ships, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to use the mod.... I went to all the options in Celestia to try to figure it out on my own but no joy. What am I doing wrong?(I know it's a simple fix) Thanks guys :D

Hi Sten,

first of all, did you read the FAQ here? Second did you read the readme-files that hopefully were added to the downloads? Third, there are good Celestia Manuals out there, see for example http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/catal ... ation.html

So now some answers.
Fastest Method: You know the name of the DSO or the star around which the thing that you want to see orbits.
It's then RETURN, Entering Name, RETURN and G for GoTo or C for Center.
If the thing you want to see orbits around a star:
RETURN, Entering StarName/Planetname, RETURN and G for GoTo or C for Center.
If the thing you want to see orbits around a planet..:
RETURN, Entering StarName/Planetname/Objektname, RETURN and G for GoTo or C for Center.

It is always a good idea to take a look into the ssc-file to find out the name of the objekt and its parenting bodies.

Thks for the help Guckytos, that solve the problem. I do have another question. And this time I did my homework and look around at various faq's and manuals. Ok, for the different ships you can download and use, is there a way were you can use them to fly to the various places you can go to in Celestia? I know there is the default controls for a "imaginary ship" and i do know how to bank, pitch and roll. But can you do these with a "actual ship?" Is there a way you can keep the camera on a ship and then go to other planets and stars? Thks again.

Dear Sten:

You can take a model of a spacecraft or ship and install it as an add-on. You can then select it in Celestia and go to it by pressing the G key. You will be outside of the ship, looking at it from outside of the hull. You can right-click-drag and change your view around the ship any way you like.

Any model available in Celestia will do.

If you press the [Escape] key, you will release your hold on the ship. It will move away from you in the direction of its orbital path.
