Post #1by billybob884 » 04.09.2002, 02:42

I have an idea for he next prerelease of celestia 1.2.5. Why not make more file types work like .tif or .tga or .gif. Just an idea! :D

Wouldn't it be sweet if we could use animated gifs on our gas giants.
Oh well I can dream I guess.

I think that Celestia could use more 3D object formats, like DXF, COB, OBJ,...

Because not all people can create a 3DS file... (like me)

Well, the GIF compression standard is patented by Unisys and you need to pay a hefty amount to use it in your software. And those cheapskate Linux users () won't pay, so we use .png as a substitute for gif tranparancy. Unfortuantely I can't think of another graphics format that supports animation. Does Unisys's patent cover read-only - eg Celestia - use?

I agree with Astrobot. I grew up on Bryce 2 and it's landscaping capabilites would be very useful in Celestia, surely?

I think there are enuf file types. Jpg is too slow. Gif doesn't have enough potential. Limitation in colors, no good compression.
dds is quite okay, acceptable speed, good quality, and the 3d models are also enough.

Just my opinion.
